To buy at America's Car-Mart without regrets, pre-qualify online, pick a car on your own local lot, and before you sign get the price, APR, term, payment schedule and total of payments in writing, with the service contract and Accident Protection Plan priced separately. Car-Mart's 100% Satisfaction policy is an exchange within 7 days or under 500 miles, not a refund, and I found no free CARFAX or AutoCheck mentioned on its site, so pull your own history report. One more thing in October 2026: the company is in a serious cash crunch, and that changes how carefully you should keep your paperwork.
Everything below comes from car-mart.com's financing, FAQ and product pages, which I read on Saturday, October 17, 2026, plus the company's annual report for the fiscal year ended April 30, 2026, and recent news. If you are comparing buy-here-pay-here lots, our DriveTime buying checklist is the closest match.
Step 1: Know the company's situation right now
This would normally be a footnote, but it is not this month. In its first quarter results released September 9, 2026, Car-Mart said retail units sold fell 81.9% from a year earlier, its dealership count went from 154 to 94, and a special committee is weighing financing and strategic options. On October 16 the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported the stock had dropped 23% to $1.04 after lenders granted a seventh extension, this one through October 22, and that the company has warned about its ability to keep going. A deal there can still be a fair one, but keep every contract, receipt and service contract document, and ask who services the loan and who pays service contract claims.
Step 2: Pre-qualify, and know what it is
The online form takes about five minutes, according to Car-Mart's financing page, and you get a text with your pre-qualification. The FAQ says this is only a soft inquiry. A hard inquiry may come once you pick a car and submit the full application, and applications stay good for 30 days. Car-Mart says it reviews past credit but does not use a traditional credit score to decide financing.
Step 3: Shop your own store's lot
The FAQ is blunt: Car-Mart does not transfer vehicles between dealerships, and the exchange policy only works at the store where you bought. So shortlist cars at the location you will actually use. Write down each VIN, run it through the free NMVTIS title check, and order a CARFAX or AutoCheck yourself. Car-Mart says it buys from trade-ins, wholesalers and sometimes auctions and inspects each car twice. Fine, but that is the seller describing its own stock. Do not take a printed report from anyone as proof; we have seen edited PDFs. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or America's Car-Mart. In mid October 2026 a single report through us was about $5.50 for guests and $4.50 for members, near $6.75 for both brands, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 direct. Confirm the price at checkout.
Step 4: Bring documents and insurance
Bring a valid driver's license, proof of income such as a pay stub or benefit letter, proof of residence such as a utility bill or lease, proof of identity, and your title if you are trading in. You need insurance in hand at signing. Car-Mart's FAQ says full coverage is required for all sales in Texas and for any sale over $10,000, and the proof has to name America's Car-Mart as lienholder. Car-Mart does not sell insurance, so get quotes the day before.
Step 5: Read the loan like it is the car
The annual report filed with the SEC gives the real ranges. Down payments ran from 0% to 20% of the price, averaging 5.1%. Terms ran 11 to 70 months, averaging 49 months. Fixed APRs ran 6.0% to 20.3%, based mainly on credit score and state usury limits, with a weighted average of 17.7%. About 78% of payments were due weekly or biweekly. The report also says the company uses GPS technology to support collections, so ask if your car has a device and what it does. Weekly payments look small; multiply out the total of payments before you agree. Some locations offer a lay-a-way plan for up to six weeks on the down payment, but not in Texas.
Step 6: Price the add-ons one at a time
Service Contract Plus comes in Silver (12 months/12,000 miles), Gold (24/24,000) and Platinum (36/36,000), and which ones you can buy depends on the car's price, per the product page. Repairs must be authorized by Car-Mart in advance with a written diagnostic. The Accident Protection Plan is a debt cancellation product for theft or a total loss; it is not offered in Indiana, and the FAQ adds Illinois. Ask for the payment with and without each one. Our service contract explainer covers what to read in the contract, and the dealer doc fees by state table helps you spot padding.
Step 7: Use the exchange window on purpose
The 100% Satisfaction page spells out the limits: a full 7 days or less than 500 miles, whichever comes first, one exchange per sale, a car of equal or lesser value (or pay a higher down payment to trade up), returned clean and undamaged, and "No money will be returned." It is not available in Illinois. If day seven falls on a closed day, you get until 6 p.m. the next open day. Use those days to get an independent mechanic's inspection. DriveTime, by contrast, advertises a 5-day return. Our "as is" explainer covers what the window Buyers Guide tells you about warranty coverage.
