Frequently asked questions

Is this VIN decoder really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no credit card, no tracking. Decoder runs on public NHTSA data.

What does my VIN reveal?

Make, model, year, trim, body style, engine specs, transmission, drive type, and assembly plant. It does NOT reveal accident history — that requires a full vehicle history report.

Why can't I enter I, O, or Q?

VINs never use the letters I, O, or Q to avoid confusion with 1, 0, and 0. Any "VIN" containing those letters is invalid or mistyped.

Does this work for pre-1981 vehicles?

No. The 17-character VIN standard was mandated for US vehicles starting with the 1981 model year. Pre-1981 VINs vary in length and format.
