An Eagle VIN tells you which Chrysler or Mitsubishi plant built the car, because Eagle never had a plant of its own. In our vPIC decodes, Talon patterns starting 4E3 came back from Normal, Illinois, Vision patterns starting 2E3 came from Bramalea, Ontario, Summit patterns starting JE3 decoded to Mizushima, Japan, and Premier patterns starting 2E3 were also Bramalea. Position 10 is the year and position 11 is the plant. Chrysler killed the Eagle brand after the 1998 model year, so any Eagle-badged car is a 1988-1998 leftover.
We checked these patterns on October 14, 2026 against NHTSA's free vPIC decoder. A Chrysler press release dated September 29, 1997 told dealers the Eagle brand would end with the 1998 model year, with the Talon as the only Eagle left in the 1998 lineup. If you need the shared Chrysler codes, use our Dodge VIN decoder and Chrysler VIN decoder, or start with how to decode a VIN.
Talon: 4E3 from Normal
Talon is the Diamond Star car. Our 1995 TSi AWD pattern 4E3AL54F decoded to Normal, Illinois with a 2.0-liter four and all-wheel drive, while 4E3AK54F came back as a front-drive TSi and 4E3AK44Y as a front-drive ESi, all from Bloomington Assembly. A 1998 TSi AWD pattern 4E3AL54F and a front-drive 4E3AK54F both still pointed to Normal. So a title that says Eagle and a plant that says Illinois is normal for a Talon, not a mismatch.
Vision and Premier: 2E3 from Bramalea
Vision is the LH sedan. Our 1993 TSi pattern 2E3ED66F decoded to Bramalea, Ontario with a 3.5-liter V6, a 1994 ESi pattern 2E3ED56T came back with a 3.3-liter V6, and a 1997 TSi pattern 2E3ED66F still listed Bramalea Assembly. Premier is the older Renault-derived sedan. A 1989 ES pattern 2E3CB66U decoded to Bramalea with a 3.0-liter V6. Honestly, if a seller calls a Vision a "Chrysler plant car" and the decode says Canada, that still lines up.
Summit: JE3 from Japan
Summit is the Mitsubishi-sourced compact. A 1993 DL/ESi/LX sedan pattern JE3CA31A decoded to Mizushima, Japan with a 1.5-liter four, and a 1993 LX wagon pattern JE3CB50G came back as a Premium series with a 2.4-liter four. Same WMI family as other Chrysler-badged Mitsubishi imports from that era.
Year codes and the 1998 wind-down
Position 9 is the check digit under 49 CFR 565.15. Year codes in our samples included K for 1989, P for 1993, R for 1994, S for 1995, V for 1997 and W for 1998. Plant codes were E for Normal on Talon, H for Bramalea on Vision and Premier, and U for Mizushima on Summit. Chrysler's 1997 notice said Eagle U.S. sales had fallen to fewer than seven cars per dealer in 11 months of the 1997 model year, and that any Chrysler dealership could still service Eagle cars after the brand closed.
Recalls and title risk
On Talons, 00V-421 and 99V-066 cover lower lateral arm ball joints that can corrode if the boot was damaged, and 98V-069 covers transfer-case lockup from poor lubrication on all-wheel-drive cars. On Visions, 04V-021 covers floor shifter ignition-park interlock failures on 1993-1997 cars, and 98V-184 covers 3.5-liter fuel rail leaks. Summit shares older seat belt buckle and door latch campaigns from the early 1990s. Run the VIN before you talk price. Under 49 CFR 580.17, these cars can transfer with an exempt odometer line. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
Do not twin it with a Dodge or Plymouth decode
Talon shares DNA with the Mitsubishi Eclipse and the old Plymouth Laser, and Vision sits on the same LH bones as the Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler Concorde. That does not mean an Eagle VIN starts the same way. Stick to the 4E3 / 2E3 / JE3 patterns above, and use the Dodge or Chrysler posts only for shared year and restraint letters once you already know you are looking at an Eagle.
