Eastern Bank's auto loan page doesn't ask for a CARFAX or AutoCheck report, but it does set hard limits on used cars: no more than 80,000 miles, and nothing older than about 6 years. As of Oct 19, 2026 the posted APRs were 8.49% for used cars 0 to 4 years old (terms up to 60 months) and 9.49% for 5 to 6 years old (up to 36 months), with a $5,000 minimum. So the bank screens the car by age and mileage, and checking its history is still up to you.
This is the Massachusetts bank at easternbank.com. Its investor relations site says Eastern Bank was founded in 1818, completed its acquisition of HarborOne on November 1, 2025, and had 109 branches across eastern Massachusetts, southern and coastal New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut as of September 30, 2025. I read the auto loan page on Oct 19, 2026. The site blocks automated requests, so I'm citing it by name with the date rather than linking it. I didn't apply, and nothing below comes from a loan officer.
The posted rates and limits
Eastern lists three columns. Every one has a $5,000 minimum loan, and the minimum term is 12 months.
- New car -- 7.99% APR, terms up to 60 months.
- Used, 0 to 4 years old -- 8.49% APR, up to 60 months, 80,000 miles maximum.
- Used, 5 to 6 years old -- 9.49% APR, up to 36 months, 80,000 miles maximum.
The page says Premier Checking, Private Bank Checking and Select Checking customers get 0.50% off with autopay from an Eastern checking account, and other Eastern customers get 0.25% off. It also says qualified customers may finance up to 90% of the vehicle's value, which can include sales tax, warranties and other related costs. To apply you call 1-800-EASTERN or go into a branch. I didn't see an online application on the page.
A couple of things it doesn't say. It doesn't explain how the bank counts a car's age, so ask whether a 2020 model counts as 6 years old this fall or 7. It also says nothing about private-party sales, salvage or rebuilt titles, so ask about those directly.
What 9.49% for 36 months does to a payment
That shorter term on 5- and 6-year-old cars is the part people miss. By my math, borrowing $15,000 at 8.49% for 60 months comes to about $308 a month and roughly $3,460 in interest. The same $15,000 at 9.49% over 36 months is about $480 a month, though only about $2,300 in interest. You pay less overall, but the monthly hit is a lot bigger, and that's when people start rushing the inspection to get the deal done.
The 90% cap matters too. On a $16,000 car the most you could borrow is $14,400, so plan on at least $1,600 down, more if you're rolling in tax and a warranty.
How the rates compare
Experian's Q2 2026 figures put the average used car loan at 11.19% APR, with averages of 6.29% for super prime borrowers (781 and up), 8.81% for prime (661-780) and 13.93% for near prime (601-660). Eastern's 8.49% for newer used cars lands right around Experian's prime average, before any autopay discount. The page doesn't say whether those APRs depend on your credit, so ask what rate you'd actually get. Where CARFAX fits
The 80,000-mile cap makes the odometer reading part of the loan decision, and that's a good reason to look at the mileage history before you sign anything. A history report shows recorded readings over time, and a reading that goes backward or a long gap is worth asking about. Check the title on NMVTIS for brands, then use a CARFAX report or AutoCheck for accidents, owners and mileage.
If the car has a branded title, read our guide to bank requirements for rebuilt-title loans before you call. Eastern's page doesn't mention branded titles at all.
Massachusetts paperwork
The bank says you need a Sales Agreement showing the dollar amount when you apply. For closing, it asks for proof of income on loans over $25,000 and an RMV-1 for purchases, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles form. On a private sale, our Massachusetts private-sale title transfer steps cover the title side so the lien gets recorded right.
We resell CARFAX and AutoCheck reports as a licensed reseller and aren't affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Eastern Bank. Our mid October 2026 prices were roughly $5.50 for a guest report, $4.50 for a member report and $6.75 for both, compared with about $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Checkout has the current number, so confirm it there.
