GMC Recall Check by VIN: Open vs Fixed on a Used Sierra

To check GMC recalls on a used Sierra, Yukon, Terrain, or Savana, run the 17-digit VIN on NHTSA's free recall lookup and again through a GMC dealer or GM owner portal, then read whether each campaign shows open or remedied. Open means the free dealer fix is still owed; remedied means a repair order should exist. GMC shares GM's campaign network with Chevrolet, so many bulletins list both badges in the same PDF.

Mid October 2026 still has plenty of used Sierras and Yukons advertised as "all recalls complete" with zero campaign IDs attached. We have seen that line on private-sale texts that also refuse a phone VIN check. Treat the phrase as marketing until you have screenshots.

How to run the VIN on GMC metal

Match the dash plate VIN to the door sticker. Run the federal tool first. Our walkthrough for checking recalls by VIN shows the screens. Save every open row, the remedy text, and the completion flag. Then ask a GMC dealer to pull Investigate Vehicle History for the same VIN, or check a GM owner recall portal. Manufacturer campaign codes (the N25... / N26... style numbers) often differ from the NHTSA ID a seller remembers from a Facebook comment.

Open means unfinished. Remedied means GM recorded a completion. Ask for the repair order that names the GM campaign and the date. Decoding the VIN with our GMC VIN decoder confirms year, plant, and series before you compare two similar Sierra ads. If the window sticker year disagrees with the decode, slow down. Chevrolet trucks share many of the same airbag populations; our Chevrolet VIN decoder is useful when you are cross-shopping a Silverado against a Sierra with the same build year.

Verified roof-rail airbag campaigns on Sierra and HD

NHTSA acknowledgment 26V-166 covers about 2,819 vehicles including certain 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2019 Sierra 2500/3500 Crew Cab trucks (alongside matching Chevrolets). The left or right roof-rail airbag inflator end cap may detach, or the sidewall may rupture. Dealers replace both modules free. GM's number is N262549710. Letters were expected around May 4, 2026. Acknowledgment 26V-325 expands that list by about 2,785 more trucks with the same defect pattern; GM's number is N262557310, with letters expected around July 6, 2026.

Look, a seller who says "GM already fixed the airbags on every Sierra" is guessing. These two campaigns are VIN-specific and fairly small. Your truck may be outside the population entirely, or still open. Screenshot the federal result instead of arguing on the lot.

Savana camera noncompliance and shopping context

On some 2024 GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express commercial cutaways, bulletin 24V-858 covers vans that may be missing the required rear-vision camera display because the wrong inside mirror was installed. That fails FMVSS 111. Dealers inspect and replace the mirror as needed, free. GM's number is N242481860. Fleet vans change mirrors often; confirm the camera image in reverse yourself.

For non-recall shopping notes on the full-size truck, our used GMC Sierra buying guide covers generation and trim traps. Older GM ignition-switch campaigns still matter on some mid-2010s cars that share the corporate parts bin; see our GM ignition-switch recall used-car check if you are looking at older badges in the same family.

Dealer fixes stay free on second owners

Safety recall remedies stay free at participating dealers no matter who holds the title now. That does not mean the seller already closed the campaign. If the lookup still shows open, treat the truck as unfinished until a dealer books the work. Ask about loaner or mobile options when you schedule; they vary by bulletin.

One blunt risk line: a cropped "recall cleared" PDF with no VIN visible is not proof. Fake completion screenshots move through private sales and small lots. Run the federal tool on your phone before money changes hands.

What a history report shows vs misses

Honestly, recall rows on a history report can lag. CARFAX says its reports can show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, plus recall rows when partners feed them. Use the report for title and wreck history. Use NHTSA plus the dealer IVH pull for recall truth. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 guest or about $4.50 member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
