Honda Recall Check by VIN: Fuel Pump and Takata Campaigns

To check Honda or Acura recalls on a used Honda, run the 17-digit VIN on NHTSA's free recall lookup and on Honda's owner recall site, then read open vs completed status before you buy. Open means the free dealer fix is still owed. Fuel-pump and Takata inflator campaigns are the ones that still catch shoppers who trusted a seller's "airbags are fine" story.

As of mid October 2026, plenty of 2018-2020 Accords, CR-Vs, and Civics are cycling through private sales with thin folders. Those years sit inside a fuel-pump expansion that covers more than two million Honda and Acura vehicles. Acura uses the same owner tools, so the steps below apply to both badges.

How to check Honda and Acura by VIN

Match the dash VIN to the door sticker. Run the federal tool first, then the same VIN on Honda's recall page. Screenshot every open campaign. Ask a Honda or Acura dealer for the repair order that names Honda's campaign codes (for the fuel pump expansion those codes include KGC and KGD). Our post on checking recalls by VIN covers the federal screens. Confirm the model year with our Honda VIN decoder before you argue about which campaign applies.

Honestly, do not accept a verbal "Honda already fixed it" without the order. We have seen lots reuse a completion printout from a different VIN. Your phone, your lookup. Owner portal logins help when you already bought the car; before you buy, the public VIN tools are enough.

Fuel pump recall 23V-858 (verified)

NHTSA acknowledgment 23V-858 covers about 2,539,902 vehicles. The filing lists certain 2018-2020 Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and related trims, plus matching Acura ILX, MDX, RDX, RLX, TLX, and 2017-2020 Acura NSX and Honda Accord Hybrid ranges. The fuel pump inside the tank may fail, which can stall the engine while driving. Dealers replace the fuel pump module free of charge. Honda's numbers are KGC and KGD. The filing says this expands earlier campaigns 21V-215 and 20V-314, so a repair receipt for an older pump campaign does not automatically clear 23V-858. Check the exact VIN.

If you are shopping a CR-V from those years, pair the recall check with our used Honda CR-V buying guide. A completed pump swap is good news; it is not a substitute for a compression test or a look at the turbo plumbing on a 1.5T if that is what you are buying. Stall complaints on a cold start are a reason to pause the deposit until the VIN clears.

Owner notification letters for 23V-858 were expected around February 5, 2024, per the acknowledgment. That does not mean every second owner ever opened the mail. Run the VIN anyway.

Takata inflators still matter on older cars

Certain early-2000s Honda and Acura models remain in Takata "do not drive" populations when the Alpha driver inflator was never replaced. Treat any open Takata row as a stop sign, not a weekend project. Our Takata airbag recall used-car check explains why a history report alone is not enough. Free towing and mobile repair have been part of many Takata remedies; ask the dealer what is still offered for that VIN. If the listing photos show a clean airbag cover, that proves nothing about the inflator inside.

History, title and money

A finished recall does not clear salvage, flood, or odometer problems. Pull your own report. CARFAX says its reports can show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Fake seller PDFs are still a thing; order it yourself. For dealer paperwork habits, our dealer buying checklist covers the rest of the lot visit.

When to walk away

Walk if the seller blocks a VIN lookup, if an open Takata campaign still shows do-not-drive language, or if the fuel-pump campaign is open and the seller wants full retail as if the car were already remedied. Dealer fixes are free; the inconvenience of scheduling is not a reason to skip the work before you take title. If the car is otherwise right, schedule the pump module or inflator before or at delivery, and keep the repair order with the bill of sale.
