Jaguar VIN Decoder: How to Read a Jaguar VIN (SAJ, SAD)

A Jaguar VIN starts with SAJ on cars (XE, XF, F-Type, XK) and SAD on the SUVs (F-Pace, E-Pace, I-Pace). Positions 4-8 carry the model, body and engine, position 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant: A for Solihull, C or 8 for Castle Bromwich, 1 for Graz in Austria. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls by VIN, because the I-Pace battery campaigns are the kind of thing a seller forgets to mention.

We ran Jaguar patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder on October 13, 2026, with real check digits, from a 2012 XK to a 2022 F-Pace. Used Jaguars are cheap for a reason: they depreciate hard, and some of them got that way after a rough life. So the VIN is the first filter. If the 17 positions are new to you, start with how to decode a VIN.

Positions 1-3: SAJ for cars, SAD for SUVs

vPIC lists the manufacturer as Jaguar Land Rover Limited for every pattern we tried. That same company name shows up on Land Rover VINs, which start with SAL, so if a listing calls a car a "Jaguar" and the VIN starts with SAL, you are looking at a Range Rover or a Discovery. In our runs, SAJ covered the XE, XF, F-Type and XK, and SAD covered the F-Pace, E-Pace and I-Pace. If you are cross-shopping a Mercedes GLC, those codes are in our Mercedes VIN decoder.

Positions 4-8: model and engine

The middle block is Jaguar's model and powertrain code, and vPIC's data is decent but uneven. A 2018 F-Pace pattern starting SADCJ2FX came back as an S trim with all-wheel drive and the AJ20 2.0-liter engine. A 2018 E-Pace starting SADFJ2FX also returned the AJ20 2.0. A 2019 I-Pace starting SADHB2S1 came back as a battery electric SUV. A 2016 XF starting SAJBD4BV returned a supercharged 3.0-liter V6, and a 2020 XF starting SAJBE4FX returned the AJ20P 2.0. A 2017 F-Type starting SAJWA6AT came back with the supercharged 3.0 V6 and rear-wheel drive.

vPIC fell short on newer cars, though. Several of our 2019-2022 car patterns returned a model year and a plant but almost nothing else, with a note that the maker had not submitted data for some positions. When that happens, the engine field is blank, not wrong. Go to the door-jamb label, the under-hood emissions label and the service records instead of filling the gap with the seller's word. A four-cylinder F-Pace priced like a six is the mistake we would check for every time.

Positions 9-11: check digit, year and plant

Position 9 is the check digit defined in 49 CFR 565.15. It catches typos; a cloned VIN lifted from a real car still passes. Position 10 is the year: C was 2012, G was 2016, H was 2017, J was 2018, K was 2019, L was 2020 and N was 2022 in our runs.

Position 11 is the plant. A decoded to Solihull, England, on the F-Pace and XE. C decoded to Castle Bromwich on the XF, and 8 decoded to Castle Bromwich on the F-Type. 1 decoded to Graz, Austria, on both the E-Pace and the I-Pace. So the "British-built" line in a listing is true for most Jaguars, but not for every SUV. That matters less for quality than for honesty. A seller who gets the plant wrong may have the trim wrong too.

Recalls to run on a used Jaguar

Run the full VIN; campaigns follow build dates, not just model years. The big ones we confirmed this week are on the I-Pace. Recall 23V-369 covers about 6,400 2019-2024 I-Paces whose high-voltage battery may overheat; owners were told to park and charge outside, away from structures, until the repair, which is a software update plus module replacement as needed. A follow-up, 24V-183, covers about 258 2019-2020 cars that need a full battery replacement. If the seller says "it got the update," ask which campaign, and get the repair order with the VIN on it. Our post on used EV battery recalls covers what that paperwork should look like.

Gas models have their own list. Recall 24V-451 covers about 150 2021-2024 F-Paces whose oil filter housing can crack and leak oil into the engine bay, a fire risk. Recall 25V-466 covers about 1,400 2021-2024 E-Paces whose passenger air bag may tear in a crash. And recall 26V-599, filed in September 2026, covers a DC-DC converter that can fail and cut drive power on several Land Rover models plus the 2021-2024 E-Pace and F-Pace. Interim owner letters were not expected until November 13, 2026, so plenty of sellers will not know about it yet.

History and the report

Car and Driver's I-Pace page and F-Pace page are useful for trims and engines by year. A VIN decode will not show salvage brands, odometer gaps, flood titles or insurance claims. Those come from DMV, insurer, auction and shop records, which CARFAX describes as its sources. Pull your own report; seller PDFs get edited. If you buy from a lot, our dealer buying checklist covers the paperwork. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
