A used Mazda's recall status lives in two places you can check for free: NHTSA's VIN lookup and Mazda USA's owner recall page. Type the 17-digit VIN into both, then ask a Mazda dealer to print the campaign history so every open item has a Mazda campaign code next to it. Open means the repair is still owed and free. Remedied should come with a dated repair order.
Mazda recalls tend to be quiet ones. Fuel pumps, engine software, camera images, air bag sensors. That's exactly why sellers forget about them, and why a clean-driving CX-5 can still be carrying an unfinished fuel pump campaign three owners later. We pulled Mazda's NHTSA recall records on October 13, 2026 while writing this, and the campaigns below are the ones we'd ask about first on the cars people actually shop used.
How to run the VIN and read the result
Read the VIN from the windshield plate and the door jamb label and make sure both match the title. Run it through the federal tool (our guide to checking recalls by VIN explains each status), then run it again on Mazda's recall information page. Mazda's own codes look like 5321K or 7525E, and that's what a service advisor will search. If a recall shows remedy not yet available, the defect is confirmed but parts or software are not ready, so plan on a return visit later.
Decode the VIN with our Mazda VIN decoder too. Many Mazda campaigns are limited by production date, so two 2018 CX-5s on the same lot can have different recall lists. That's normal. A seller who says "it's the same year, so it's the same" is guessing.
CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6: fuel pump and stall campaigns
NHTSA acknowledgment 21V-875 covers about 121,038 vehicles, including certain 2018 Mazda3 and Mazda6, 2019 CX-3, 2018-2019 MX-5, CX-5 and CX-9, and 2019-2020 Mazda2. The impeller in the low-pressure fuel pump can crack and deform, which can stop the pump. Dealers replace the pump free under Mazda recall 5321K. A stall from a dead fuel pump on a highway on-ramp is the scenario to picture, so do not let this one ride.
Separately, 19V-497 covers about 262,220 2018-2019 CX-5 and Mazda6 plus 2019 Mazda3 cars where a powertrain control module software error can stall the engine. Dealers reprogram the PCM under Mazda code 3719F. It's a quick software visit, which also makes it easy for a previous owner to have skipped. If you're comparing a CX-5 against other compact crossovers, our used Mazda CX-5 buying guide covers the non-recall checklist.
Camera and air bag sensor campaigns
On older Mazda3 hatchbacks and sedans, 23V-487 covers about 236,100 2014-2018 Mazda3 and 2016-2021 CX-3 vehicles whose rearview camera image can flicker or distort. Dealers inspect and replace the camera and add a wiring seal under 6023G. Final owner letters went out in phases by state, which is one reason a car from one region might show it remedied while a car from another still shows open. Put the car in reverse during the test drive and watch the screen for a full minute.
Newer cars have their own issue. 25V-357 covers about 171,412 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 vehicles where the air bag sensor unit can set an error code and deactivate the air bags after a low battery condition. Dealers reprogram or replace the unit under 7525E. A lit air bag light on a nearly new Mazda3 is a reason to stop the deal until a dealer scans it. And on 2022-2023 CX-30 plus 2023 CX-50, 23V-275 covers about 2,410 vehicles with a possibly damaged ABS hydraulic control unit. Our used Mazda CX-50 buying guide walks through that model's other campaigns.
Older Mazdas and where recall tools run out
If you're shopping a much older Mazda, check its air bag inflator history separately with our Takata air bag recall used-car check. Very old recalls can drop off a seller's radar entirely, and the federal tool only covers what the manufacturer reported. It also will not tell you if the car was flooded, wrecked, or rebuilt. That part needs a history report and an inspection.
Look, the free dealer fix is free regardless of who owns the car now. But if the lookup shows open, price the hassle in: a dealer appointment, maybe a parts wait, maybe a loaner and maybe not. That's real time.
Title and accident history
CARFAX says its reports can show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and recall data when partners supply it. Use NHTSA and the Mazda dealer for recall status and the report for everything else. In mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us costs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. If a seller offers a printed report that is months old and refuses a fresh pull, treat it like a fake PDF until proven otherwise.
