Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public vehicle-loan and rates materials. On Nov. 5, 2026 its rates hub showed loan APRs as low as 4.24%, with a separate personal-style cell as low as 9.75%, plus an Auto Rate Pledge note inviting members to bring a refinance for MSGCU's best rate. Because those public teasers still assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.
What MSGCU's pages say
I read MSGCU's rates hub and vehicle loans page on Nov. 5, 2026. They showed:
- Loan APRs as low as 4.24% on the rates hub, with a call to apply via loan rates links.
- A second APR teaser as low as 9.75% on the same hub (context points to non-auto lending; ask which product maps to which cell).
- An Auto Rate Pledge inviting members to bring a refinance for MSGCU's best rate, with a note that rates may be higher based on term and credit score.
- Vehicle loan product navigation for new and used cars, without a public statement that a CARFAX printout is mandatory to close.
- Operational notices on the site about Veterans Day branch closures (Nov. 11) and scheduled online banking maintenance Nov. 8-9, 2026, which do not change underwriting rules but matter if you are timing a closing.
I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN and which product the 4.24% teaser maps to for your term.
Why you should still pull a report
Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.
Questions to ask MSGCU before you sign
- Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
- Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
- Which loan product is the 4.24% as-low-as rate on the hub, and what term and credit tier does it assume?
- Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?
How to use the figures without getting trapped
MSGCU's public hub is a teaser, not a full grid like some other credit unions publish. Ask for the APR that matches your credit tier, LTV and term in writing before you shop cars. Bring your own history report to the appointment so the file matches the VIN on the purchase contract.
Honestly, we have seen buyers treat a homepage "as low as" number as a locked quote. Look, get the product name and term in the same email as the APR before you write a deposit.
Title brands and MSGCU
Public pages did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands for Michigan titles before you write a deposit check. If the seller hands you a PDF that skips auction rows, buy your own report anyway. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
MSGCU serves Michigan schools and government communities, so membership rules still gate every quote. Ask how you qualify before you spend a weekend shopping cars priced for a member APR you cannot access yet.
Classroom and first-responder loan products appear in MSGCU navigation beside vehicle loans. Do not assume those specialty programs share the same as-low-as auto teaser. Get the product name in writing with the APR.
If you refinance under the Auto Rate Pledge, bring the current payoff and your own history report so brands and mileage are not a mid-close surprise. Confirm report contents and total at checkout when you buy that file.
Keep the written APR quote beside the vehicle purchase contract so the hub teaser cannot drift into a different product mid-close. A 4.24% homepage cell that maps to a shorter term than you expected is a different loan than the ad in your head.
