Hurricane Laura (2020) flood vehicles from the Louisiana/Texas Gulf still show up years later far inland. Use NHTSA flood checks, NICB’s Laura warning, NMVTIS, and both commercial reports before you buy.
Musty odor, silt under carpet, white powder on aluminum, green copper patina, and rusty connectors are classic flood tells — even when the title looks soft. Pair the nose test with NMVTIS and both commercial reports.
NMVTIS brand codes and legends tell you how states and reporting entities marked a VIN — salvage, junk, flood, rebuilt, and more. Learn how to read them before you trust a Marketplace caption.
Private-party salvage and rebuilt deals can be fine — or a wire-transfer trap. Cropped title photos, “clean pending,” refused VIN pulls, and same-day cash pressure are classic walk-away signals.
Rebuilt and reconstructed brands often mean higher premiums, specialty carriers, or flat declines — get written quotes with the VIN before you buy. History reports help explain the brand; they do not force an insurer to say yes.
A salvage→rebuilt inspection is not a casual oil-change visit. States check identity, structure, safety equipment, and anti-theft marks — bring receipts, photos, and a plan for fails.
Owner-retained salvage (ORS) means the insured kept the totaled vehicle instead of surrendering it to the insurer — often still requiring a salvage brand before any rebuild path. Read the paper and NMVTIS before you buy.
Reconstructed and rebuilt titles usually both mean a prior salvage vehicle cleared a state inspection — but the exact word on the paper varies by DMV. Match NMVTIS brands before you treat them as interchangeable.
Hurricane Dorian (2019) flood vehicles still show up years later far from the Carolinas and Bahamas track. Use NHTSA flood checks, NMVTIS, NICB VINCheck, and both commercial reports before you buy.
Moving a salvage or rebuilt vehicle across state lines does not erase brands. NMVTIS title verification exists to catch wash attempts — photograph paper, match brands, and expect the new state to carry history forward.
