Patelco Credit Union won't finance a car with a branded title, so a salvage or lemon law buyback brand ends the loan no matter how good the price is. It doesn't require you to bring a CARFAX or AutoCheck report, and the free CARFAX reports it mentions are tied to cars bought through Enterprise Car Sales. Its used-car loans cover vehicles up to 10 years old and 150,000 miles. As of Oct 20, 2026, the posted used-car table, dated July 15, 2026, started at 5.39% APR.
I read Patelco's used, new and refinance auto loan pages and its membership page on Oct 20, 2026. That table date matters, and I'll come back to it. I didn't apply, so anything about approval odds below is Patelco's own wording, not mine.
Who can join Patelco
Patelco is a Northern California credit union with nearly $10 billion in assets and more than 550,000 members, according to its membership page. You can join if you live, work, worship or go to school in Alameda, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Marin, Merced, Napa, Placer, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus or Yolo County, or in Bakersfield, Eureka, McKinleyville or Santa Cruz. Students and alumni of UC Berkeley, SF State and Cal State East Bay qualify, as do family members and roommates of members. If none of that fits, Patelco says you can join the Financial Fitness Association, and it pays the first year's fee.
Used car rates and limits
The used-car table on Oct 20, 2026 (rates effective 07/15/2026):
- Up to 48 months: 5.39% to 17.99% APR
- 49 to 66 months: 5.39% to 17.99%
- 67 to 72 months: 5.49% to 17.99%, $10,000 minimum
- 73 to 84 months: 5.79% to 17.99%, $15,000 minimum
New-car loans start at 5.19%, and refinancing starts at 5.39%. Two footnotes change the real number. The lowest rate assumes you borrow no more than 95% of the car's value, and vehicles with more than 100,000 miles add 0.50%. For anything older than 10 years, Patelco tells you to contact its Virtual Branch, so older cars aren't ruled out outright, just not covered by the standard table.
Plugging in my own numbers: $15,000 for 60 months at 5.39% runs about $286 a month, or roughly $2,150 in interest. Add the high-mileage half point and it's about $289. Experian's Q2 2026 average used rate was 11.19%, which on the same loan is about $328 a month and $4,650 in interest. Even with the mileage bump, that's about $2,300 saved.
The branded title rule
Patelco's wording is short: "We are unable to offer financing for Branded Titles (e.g. - salvaged, lemon law)." It also lists commercial vans and heavy trucks it won't finance, including the Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Ram ProMaster and Ford F-450 and up. If the car you want came back to a maker under California's lemon law, our California lemon law buyback title guide explains how that brand shows up.
That's the reason to pull a report before you prequalify, not after. Patelco's page says prequalifying uses a soft pull and that rates lock for 15 days, which is a short window if you're still arguing with a seller. Check the VIN against NMVTIS too, since a brand from another state should show up there.
Private party and out-of-state purchases
For a private sale, Patelco says you prequalify, send in the documents, and once you're approved it issues a convenience check made out to the seller. Our California private-sale title transfer guide covers the DMV side, and the California used car sales tax guide covers the tax due when you register.
Buying across the state line is harder. Patelco says out-of-state financing is only available at select dealerships and for certain refinances, and you have to have been a member for six months. If you just joined to buy a car in Reno, that's a problem.
The Enterprise discount and the free CARFAX
Patelco advertises 1.00% off its APR on cars bought from Enterprise Car Sales, for terms up to 60 months and purchases made in 2026. Enterprise cars come with a free CARFAX report, 12 months of roadside help and a 12-month or 12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. Read our Enterprise Car Sales CARFAX policy before relying on that report, because a former rental can have a long history that doesn't look bad on paper.
Things to watch
- The rate table was dated July 15, 2026 when I read it. Ask for the current rate before you sign.
- Payments can be deferred up to 90 days, but interest still accrues.
- No prepayment penalty is listed.
Credit unions vary a lot on this. Our America First Credit Union page shows how a Utah lender handles it.
A note on our own pricing: CarVins sells CARFAX and AutoCheck reports as a licensed reseller and isn't affiliated with either company, with Experian, or with Patelco. As of late October 2026, a single report was about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and the two-report bundle about $6.75, while buying direct runs roughly $39.99 to $44.99. Your cart shows the real number, so check it there.
