Saturn Recall Check by VIN: Ion, Vue, Outlook, Aura, Sky

You can check Saturn recalls by VIN on NHTSA's site, and General Motors still covers open recall repairs at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac dealers, even though the last Saturn dealers closed in 2010. On a used Saturn in mid October 2026, start with the ignition switch recalls on the Ion and Sky, the ignition key recall on the 2002-2004 Vue, and the side air bag wiring recall on the 2008-2010 Outlook.

GM said it would wind Saturn down after a sale to Penske Automotive fell apart on September 30, 2009. ABC News reported that about 350 Saturn dealers had until October 2010 to close. So every Saturn on the road is at least 16 years old, and plenty have outlived their first three owners. Recall letters chase the registration address, which means a car that changed hands quietly can carry an open campaign for a decade. When we pulled Saturn data from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, we found more than 50 campaigns across the 1998-2010 cars, and the GM remedy notes still list a Saturn customer service number, 1-800-553-6000.

Run the VIN, then ask a GM dealer

Take the VIN off the dash and the door jamb and match it to the title. Our guide to checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA covers what each status means. Then call a GM service desk with the same VIN. Saturns shared a lot with other GM products, and Consumer Reports points out the last Aura and Astra were based on Opel designs. That sharing is why most Saturn recalls are joint filings that also list a Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, or Saab, and why a dealer for any of those brands can pull the campaign.

Ion, Sky, and Vue: ignition recalls

NHTSA recall 14V-047 is the GM ignition switch recall. Its February 2014 expansion added 2003-2007 Saturn Ion and 2007 Sky vehicles, and a later step pulled in 2008-2010 Sky cars that may have received the bad switch as a service part. The switch can slip out of Run under key-ring weight or a jolt, turning off the engine and possibly the air bags. Until the repair, GM tells owners to carry only the ignition key on the ring. 14V-171 then covers 2003-2007 Ion and 2007-2010 Sky cars where the key can come out while the ignition is not in Off. Our GM ignition switch recall guide walks through confirming both fixes.

The first Vue got its own version. 14V-490 covers about 202,155 2002-2004 Saturn Vue vehicles built from September 2001 to April 2004 where the key can be removed when the ignition is not off. Dealers check whether the key pulls out and replace the ignition cylinder and keys if it does. Later Vues have smaller items: 08V-470 covers about 42,408 2008-2009 Vues with a power steering line nut that can loosen, and 09V-233 covers 44,451 2008 Vues with body-color door handles that can stick so the door does not latch.

Outlook, Aura, Sky, and Astra

The Outlook is the Saturn most people still drive daily, and it shares its bones with the Enclave, Acadia, and Traverse. 14V-118 covers about 1,176,407 of those SUVs, including 2008-2010 Outlooks, where higher resistance in the seat side air bag wiring can stop the side bags and belt pretensioners from firing. GM notes that Outlooks already fixed under customer satisfaction campaign 10085 or special coverage 10335 were left out of the recall, so ask the dealer to check those too if the line is missing. 15V-415 covers about 691,144 of them, including 2007-2010 Outlooks, for power liftgate struts that can wear out and let an open gate fall, fixed with a software update to the liftgate motor. Our used Chevy Traverse buying guide covers the same platform in more detail.

Aura shoppers should look for 14V-224, which started with 56,214 2007-2008 Auras and grew to about 1,131,113 GM cars for a four-speed shift cable that can fracture, so the gear you select may not match the gear shown and Park may not engage. 12V-460 covers 2007-2010 Auras with the four-speed automatic, where tabs on the shift cable end can fracture. Sky owners need 17V-061, a passenger air bag suppression sensor that can get bent inside the seat. And the Astra, sold only for 2008-2009, has 16V-063, which covers about 113,716 Saab and Saturn cars whose driver frontal air bag inflator can rupture from excess pressure. GM replaces the whole driver air bag module on the Astra. Look, an Astra with that recall still open is a hard pass for us until it is done.

Old S-series and L-series cars

The plastic-paneled S-series and the L-series sedans have recalls too, mostly from 1999-2001, covering seat belt anchorages, fuel tanks, and park-lock compliance. Most of those were fixed long ago, but run the VIN anyway. Rust and tired brake lines on a car this old are not recall items, so inspect for them on your own. For the air bag side of older GM and Saab cars, our Takata air bag recall guide explains why inflator campaigns can come in waves.

History, title, and price

A recall check will not show flood, salvage, or a rolled odometer, and cheap Saturns are a favorite for curbstoners who flip auction cars on marketplace sites. Pull the history and compare owner count and mileage with what the seller says. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail.
