SDCCU Auto Loan: CARFAX, Title Rules and the 2017 Cutoff (Oct 2026)

San Diego County Credit Union lists nothing older than 2017 on its rate sheet. Rates, membership, the 120% value fine print, and what to ask on titles.

SDCCU Auto Loan: CARFAX, Title Rules and the 2017 Cutoff (Oct 2026)

San Diego County Credit Union doesn't publish a CARFAX or AutoCheck requirement for auto loans, and it doesn't post a rule on salvage or rebuilt titles. The limit that will affect most used-car shoppers is model year: SDCCU's rate sheet stops at 2017, and anything older isn't listed at all. As of Oct. 20, 2026, used cars from 2017 on start at 5.19% APR for up to 66 months, and SDCCU only finances cars in California, Arizona and Nevada.

I read SDCCU's vehicle loan rates page and the matching PDF, its auto loan overview and FAQ, its account-opening and Financial Fitness Association pages and its auto buying service page on Oct. 20, 2026. I didn't apply. Everything here is from what SDCCU posts publicly, and I've flagged two places where its own pages don't agree.

Who can join

Membership is required, but SDCCU's account page makes it easy. You qualify by living or working in Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara or Ventura county, or as an immediate family or household member of a member. Anyone else can join through the Financial Fitness Association for a one-time $8 fee. The FAQ says you don't have to be a member for any set time before applying, and a dealer can open your membership and the loan at the same time.

Rates as of Oct. 20, 2026

From the vehicle loan rates page and PDF, "as low as" APRs by term:

  • New, 2025-2027: 4.89% to 48 or 66 months, 5.19% to 78, 6.19% to 84.
  • Used, 2022-2027: 5.19% to 48 or 66 months, 5.44% to 78, 6.49% to 84.
  • Used, 2021: 5.19% to 66 months, 5.44% to 78. No 84-month option.
  • Used, 2017-2020: 5.19% to 66 months, and nothing longer.

Terms over 66 months need at least $15,000, and over 78 months at least $25,000. A quoted rate holds for 30 days from your application. You can also get up to 90 days with no payment, but interest accrues from the contract date, so you'll pay for that break. Rates depend on loan-to-value, amount, term and credit, and the posted numbers are best-case.

Two things the pages disagree on

The overview page promises "up to 100% financing," but the rate sheet says the listed APRs "reflect loan amounts up to 120% of the retail value." Those aren't the same thing. You might be able to borrow above the car's value to cover tax and fees, but maybe not at the advertised rate. Ask what your actual loan-to-value limit is.

The other gap is age. The rate sheet doesn't list anything older than 2017, and I couldn't find a page that says whether a 2015 car is declined, priced higher or handled case by case. If you're shopping older, call before you fall for a car.

How the numbers compare

My example: $25,000 over 66 months at 5.19% is about $436 a month and $3,790 in interest. At 11.19%, the average used-car rate in Experian's Q2 2026 report (no Q3 figures yet when I checked), it's about $509 a month and $8,590 in interest. Stretching to 84 months at 6.49% drops the payment to about $371, but interest goes up to roughly $6,170. Longer isn't free.

Titles, history reports and the buying service

SDCCU's auto pages say "collateral conditions and restrictions apply" without spelling them out. I found nothing on salvage, rebuilt, lemon buyback or flood titles, and nothing on private-party purchases. Before you count on SDCCU for one of those cars, read our California salvage and rebuilt title rules and ask the credit union directly. The Signature Auto Buying Service will find a car, negotiate the price and deliver it to your branch. The page describes it for new cars, so don't expect it to inspect a used one.

Loans cover cars in California, Arizona and Nevada. Taxes differ a lot between the three, so check our guides to California and Nevada used car sales tax before you budget. If you're in Arizona, our Desert Financial post covers a lender that only finances cars located there.

Check the VIN before the loan

Because SDCCU doesn't check history for you, run the VIN through NMVTIS and pull your own report. A dealer's "clean" printout can be months old. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with either or with SDCCU. As of late October 2026, guests paid around $5.50 a report and members around $4.50, both reports together ran about $6.75, and retail is $39.99 to $44.99. The amount at checkout is the one to believe.
