SECU Maryland (secumd.org, the Baltimore-based credit union, not North Carolina's SECU) doesn't require a CARFAX or AutoCheck report for an auto loan and doesn't hand you one, and it doesn't publish a branded-title rule or an age or mileage limit for used cars either. What it does publish are low rates: on Oct. 20, 2026 its rates page showed used-car APRs from 4.29% at 36 months to 6.14% at 84 months, in a table dated July 15, 2026.
I read SECU's auto purchase page, its rates and calculators page, its refinance page and its membership eligibility page on Oct. 20, 2026. I didn't apply. Two credit unions use the SECU name and they have nothing to do with each other. If you're in North Carolina, you want ncsecu.org, which has a written ten-year, 150,000-mile limit that this SECU doesn't post.
Who can join
The eligibility page lists Maryland state employees (full-time, part-time, contractual, former and retired), employees of Maryland organizations that receive federal, state or local funding, students, alumni, faculty and staff of University System of Maryland schools, and past and present employees of unions representing state workers. If none of those fit, you can join with a one-time donation to the SECU MD Foundation. SECU says you're a member for life as long as you keep at least $10 in share savings, even if you move.
Rates on the page, dated July 15, 2026
The rates and calculators page showed these used-car APRs for purchase or refinance:
- 36 months: 4.29% (about $29.65 per $1,000), no minimum loan.
- 48-60 months: 4.79%, no minimum loan.
- 72 months: 5.39%, minimum loan $15,000.
- 84 months: 6.14%, minimum loan $35,000.
New-car rates are a quarter point lower at each term, starting at 4.04%. The fine print matters here. These are best rates, they include the discount for paying automatically from a SECU account, and SECU says refinancing a loan that's already with SECU "may yield a higher rate." The table was still dated July 15 when I read it in October, so call before you count on it.
Those minimums mean a $12,000 car can't get the 72-month term, and the 84-month rate needs at least $35,000. That's probably a good thing for most used-car buyers. On a $25,000 loan, my math puts 60 months at 4.79% at about $469 a month and $3,163 in interest, and 72 months at 5.39% at about $407 a month and $4,316. At 11.19%, the used-car average in Experian's Q2 2026 report, the 60-month payment is about $546.
Where you can buy
The auto purchase page says to get approved and then "head to your local dealer, CarMax, or Enterprise," and a footnote explains the difference between franchise dealers and independent ones, adding that SECU's auto checks can also be used at CarMax and Enterprise Car Sales. It doesn't say outright that independent lots or private sellers are excluded, and I'm not going to guess. If you're buying from a person, ask SECU first how the money gets paid out. An approval is good for 60 days from submission. SECU also offers lease buyouts and a cash-out refinance, which lets you borrow against equity in a car you already own.
What to check because SECU won't
With no title rule posted, the screening is up to you. Run the VIN on NMVTIS for brands and get a history report. Maryland has its own rules for salvage and rebuilt cars, covered in our Maryland salvage and rebuilt title rules post, and a lender can still say no at underwriting even if the website doesn't mention it. A clean title doesn't prove much either. Cars with unreported accident damage or a flood past can carry one.
Work tax and fees into the loan amount. Our Maryland used car sales tax guide explains the excise tax, and our Maryland private-sale title transfer guide walks through the paperwork if you're buying from an individual. If a dealer shows you a printed report, look at the date. A report from last spring says nothing about what happened this summer.
CarVins is a licensed reseller of CARFAX and AutoCheck reports and has no connection to either brand or to SECU. As of late October 2026, guests have paid roughly $5.50 a report, members about $4.50, and about $6.75 for the bundle, with retail running $39.99 to $44.99. Prices change, so the checkout page has the final word.
