Used Audi A6 Buying Guide: 2.0T vs V6, Years and Recalls

A used Audi A6 on a U.S. lot is almost always one of two cars: the 2012-2018 sedan or the 2019-on redesign with mild-hybrid tech on many versions. Go newer if your budget stretches and you want current driver aids; go older if you want a cheaper, simpler sedan and can prove its fuel-line campaigns are closed. Fuel leaks on early cars and the passenger occupant sensor are the recalls we would clear first, and every sample we decoded came from Neckarsulm, Germany.

We ran sample VINs through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder on October 14, 2026. A 2014 pattern starting WAUGFAFC came back as an A6 quattro Premium Plus with the 2.0T four and an automatic. A 2019 WAUL2AF2 pattern decoded as a quattro Premium Plus with a 3.0-liter V6. A 2021 WAUE8AF2 pattern listed the 45 TFSI 2.0T in quattro Premium Plus or Sport trim. The engine line is the fastest tell on a 2019-on car, and our Audi VIN decoder covers the rest of the WAU string.

Years and trims that matter

On the 2012-2018 cars, the choice is mostly the four-cylinder 2.0T versus the V6 3.0T, and quattro is on most of what you will see. On 2019-on cars, the 45 TFSI badge in our 2021 decode marks the turbo four, so check the engine field before you pay V6 money, and the recall list below shows the four-cylinder mild-hybrid starter generator had teething trouble. Car and Driver now covers the newest A6 with a 362-hp turbo V6, all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch, and says it picks up where the old one left off. MotorTrend and Consumer Reports both keep year pages, and the IIHS rating page for the 2020 A6 is worth a glance if crash results drive your choice.

So which one? If you drive a lot of highway miles, the V6 cars feel more relaxed. If you mostly commute, a 2.0T with records is the sensible money.

Recalls to close by VIN

Fuel leaks top the list on the early cars. 16V-646 covers 2012-2013 A6 and A7 cars with an engine-bay fuel hose that can degrade and leak, and 17V-781 covers 2012-2014 A6 and A7 cars whose fuel line has a compression point that can weaken. 18V-370 covers 2012-2018 A6 sedans with basic front seats, where wear on the passenger seat's sensing mat can confuse the occupant detection module that decides whether the passenger air bag should fire.

On 2019-on cars, 20V-153 covers 2019-2020 A6 sedans with the mild-hybrid 2.0TFSI, where moisture can get into the starter generator and short it. 20V-274 covers a small number of 2020 A6, A6 allroad and A7 cars whose passenger air bag may not open through the dash seam properly. 23V-601 covers 2019-2021 cars that may have a wrongly labeled brake fluid cap, which can lead to the wrong fluid going in. 25V-900, filed in December 2025, covers a long list of 2019-2026 Audis with rear camera software that may not show the image, and NHTSA lists a follow-up, 26V-125, for some 2019 A6 cars already fixed under 25V-900. Run the VIN through our Audi recall check by VIN page or the general NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough.

Title and price

Lots of A6 sedans come back off lease, which is fine, but a recall screen will not catch a flood title, an odometer jump or a salvage brand. A seller PDF with no VIN on it is not a history report. CARFAX describes its reports as drawing on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.

A4 instead?

If the A6 is bigger than you need, our used Audi A4 buying guide runs the same checks on the smaller sedan. Either way, a pre-purchase inspection should include a look for fuel smell in the engine bay and a scan for stored air bag codes.
