Used BMW X5 Buying Guide: F15 vs G05, CPO and Recalls

Pick the X5 generation before you look at prices. The 2014-2018 F15 offered a diesel, a plug-in hybrid, and a small optional third row; the 2019-and-newer G05 drives better and has a newer cabin, and current versions have no third-row option at all. Then run the VIN for recalls (a couple of X5 fixes have had to be done twice), pull the title and accident history yourself, and price any certified pre-owned warranty against what an independent BMW shop would charge for the same inspection.

The X5 is a heavy, complicated luxury SUV, and in mid October 2026 you can find ten-year-old ones priced like a new compact car. That gap is where people get hurt. We are not going to tell you a cheap X5 is a trap by default, but the paperwork has to be better on this truck than on a Corolla, and the recall check takes five minutes.

F15 vs G05: what changed

Car and Driver's 2018 X5 review describes the last F15-year lineup: a gas inline-six (35i), a V-8, a diesel inline-six (35d), and the xDrive40e plug-in hybrid, all with an eight-speed automatic. It liked the cabin and engines but called the ride and handling disappointing and the third row barely suitable for small children. The 2019 redesign, confirmed on the IIHS X5 ratings page, brought back the driving feel, according to Car and Driver's 2019 review: a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six in the xDrive40i, a 456-hp twin-turbo V-8 in the xDrive50i, and a tested 4.9-second run to 60 mph for the six.

Newer G05 trucks changed again. The current Car and Driver page lists a 375-hp inline-six, a 523-hp V-8 in the M60i, and a 483-hp plug-in hybrid, notes there is no third-row option, and quotes a 7200-pound max tow rating. Certified pre-owned vs private sale

A BMW Certified Pre-Owned X5 comes with a dealer inspection and extra warranty coverage, and on an expensive SUV that warranty can be worth real money. Get the CPO terms in writing, including the deductible and what counts as wear. A private sale is usually cheaper, so spend part of the savings on a pre-purchase inspection at an independent BMW specialist. Ask them to scan every module, check for coolant and oil leaks, and look at the air suspension if the truck has it. Service records matter more than mileage here. An X5 with 90,000 documented miles can be a safer bet than one with 50,000 and no receipts.

Recalls to check by VIN

Run the VIN with our NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough, then ask a BMW dealer for the open-campaign list. On early F15 trucks, 23V-797 covers 486 vehicles including 2014 X5 sDrive35i and xDrive35i models whose driver air bag inflator may explode during deployment because of a manufacturing defect, and 24V-527 adds about 1,145 more BMWs, 2014 X5 included, with the same problem. Dealers replace the driver air bag free. If that one shows open, book the dealer before you start daily-driving the truck.

Plug-in buyers should look for 24V-608, a roughly 720,796-vehicle recall that includes 2016-2018 X5 xDrive40e models with an electrical water pump connector that can let in water and short. Dealers inspect, replace the pump and connector as needed, and add a shield. On early G05 trucks, the starter recall needs a second look. 24V-576 gave 2019-2020 X5s and other models a software update to stop starter overheating after repeated start attempts. Then 25V-644 replaced the starter itself and says vehicles repaired under 24V-576 need to be repaired again. So a 2024 repair order for the starter does not close it. Newer 2024-2025 X5s may also appear under 24V-697, an integrated brake module defect that can cost power brake assist.

Title and history

Insurers total a vehicle when repairs get close to its value, so a pricey SUV can absorb a big wreck and still come back with a clean title. That makes accident history matter a lot. CARFAX says its reports show title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents. Our guide on how to read a CARFAX report explains structural damage and airbag deployment lines. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. A seller who hands you a printed report with the accident section folded over is telling you what you need to know.
