A used Chevy Silverado 2500HD is a good buy when you match the engine to the work and clear the VIN first: the 2020 redesign brought a new 6.6-liter gas V-8 and a 10-speed Allison behind the Duramax diesel, while 2015-2019 trucks use the older 6.0-liter gas V-8 with a six-speed or the Duramax with an Allison automatic. Run the VIN before you talk money. Diesel trucks from 2020-2022 carry a transmission control valve recall that can lock the rear wheels, and 2020-2024 trucks with the power-release tailgate have a big latch campaign too.
This guide is for the three-quarter-ton truck. If you are shopping the half-ton, our used Chevy Silverado 1500 buying guide covers lifters, the eight-speed shudder, and the 6.2-liter recall, and none of that is the main story on an HD. Our used GMC Sierra buying guide covers the GMC twin. In mid October 2026, plenty of used HDs on dealer lots were bought to tow, so assume the one in front of you has worked hard until the history and an inspection say otherwise.
Which generation you are looking at
Consumer Reports marks 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2020 as redesign years for the Silverado 2500HD. For 2020, CR lists a standard 401-hp 6.6-liter gas V-8 with a six-speed automatic and an available 445-hp 6.6-liter turbodiesel with a 10-speed, and says GM claims a properly equipped HD can tow up to 35,500 pounds. CR's notes on the 2024 update say the gas V-8 now pairs with a 10-speed, the diesel was raised to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, and forward collision warning plus automatic emergency braking became standard on every trim.
For the 2015-2019 truck, Car and Driver's Silverado HD review, written for the 2018 model, lists a standard Vortec 6.0-liter V-8 with 360 hp and a six-speed automatic, and a Duramax diesel with an Allison transmission rated at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft. It also says the 2018 3500HD could tow up to 23,300 pounds. Older 2007-2014 trucks are cheaper and simpler, but they are also the ones with the oldest air bag campaigns, which we cover below.
Diesel trucks: what to check on the VIN
NHTSA recall 24V-797 covers about 463,295 2020-2022 GM trucks and SUVs with diesel engines, including the Silverado 2500 and 3500. The transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up. Dealers install new transmission control software, and GM offers special coverage for transmissions the software flags as having a bad valve. A follow-up, 26V-083, covers about 1,055 trucks that may have been repaired incorrectly under 24V-797. So a closed line on 24V-797 does not settle it; check 26V-083 too.
Older Duramax trucks have block heater campaigns. 21V-496 covers about 338,020 2017-2019 Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 6.6 Duramax and the optional block heater cord, where an electrical short can occur in the cable or terminals. It follows 19V-328, which covered about 318,374 similar trucks. If you live somewhere cold and the previous owner plugged it in every night, this one matters. Our post on checking a used diesel truck on CARFAX and AutoCheck covers the history-report side of diesel shopping.
Gas and diesel: tailgate, steering, fuel tanks, air bags
24V-060 covers about 570,434 2020-2024 Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks with power-release tailgates, where water can short the release switch and let the tailgate unlatch while parked. Dealers replace the touchpad switches. On 2024 trucks, 23V-549 covers about 3,893 HDs whose steering gear shaft may fracture and disconnect from the steering arm. Dual-tank trucks are worth a closer look. 23V-047 covers about 22,132 2017-2019 trucks whose rear tank may collapse and stall the engine, and 26V-129 covers about 11,807 2025-2026 gas 3500s with dual tanks.
Air bag campaigns run through every generation. GM's roof rail air bag inflator recalls, including 26V-611 filed in September 2026 for 2016 HD trucks and 24V-756 for 2018-2019 crew cabs, deal with an inflator end cap that may detach or a sidewall that may rupture. On 2009-2011 HDs, 21V-050 replaced front passenger inflators on trucks sold or registered in certain states, and 15V-324 covered 2007-2008 HD passenger air bags. Owner letters for 26V-611 were not expected until November 9, 2026, so a seller may honestly not know about it yet.

Use our walkthrough on how to read a CARFAX report to look for fleet use, commercial registration, and accident repairs. Look, a work truck with a fresh detail can still hide a rebuilt title or a rolled odometer. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail.
