Used Chevy Trailblazer Buying Guide: 1.2 vs 1.3, AWD, Recalls

2021-on Trailblazer (not the old TrailBlazer) engines and trims, vs Trax, and the NHTSA seat, brake-boost, jack, and rearview-camera campaigns to clear by VIN.

Used Chevy Trailblazer Buying Guide: 1.2 vs 1.3, AWD, Recalls

A used Chevy Trailblazer worth buying in mid October 2026 is the 2021-on subcompact crossover -- not the early-2000s body-on-frame TrailBlazer with the capital B. Pick between the 1.2-liter turbo CVT (front drive) and the stronger 1.3-liter turbo (CVT front drive or nine-speed AWD), clear any open recalls by VIN, and do not confuse it with the larger Blazer or the cheaper Trax.

MotorTrend's Trailblazer overview and Car and Driver's Trailblazer page both treat the current car as a small crossover that returned for 2021. MotorTrend even calls out the name history so shoppers do not mix generations. If you want Chevy's even cheaper small SUV, our used Chevy Trax buying guide covers that sibling. Look, the Trax is usually FWD-only with the 1.2 turbo; the Trailblazer is the one that can add AWD and the 1.3.

1.2 CVT vs 1.3, and which trim you actually want

Base LS and LT front-drivers often start with a turbocharged 1.2-liter three making 137 hp and 162 lb-ft through a CVT, per MotorTrend and Car and Driver. The upgrade is a 1.3-liter turbo three at 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. Front-drive 1.3 cars still use a CVT; AWD pairs the 1.3 with a nine-speed automatic. MotorTrend timed a 2024 Trailblazer RS AWD at about 9.3 seconds to 60 mph -- leisurely, and they called the little three noisy under hard throttle.

Trims run LS, LT, ACTIV, and RS. ACTIV and RS get the 1.3 as standard equipment. ACTIV adds off-road-leaning suspension bits and a skid plate look; RS leans sportier with larger wheels. Honestly, if you need AWD for snow, buy a 1.3 nine-speed AWD car and skip paying ACTIV or RS money unless you like the look. If you mostly commute on dry freeways, a well-kept 1.2 LT can be the bargain -- just drive it enough to feel CVT flare and listen for odd noises. Cargo space is competitive with other subcompacts; MotorTrend and Car and Driver both place the Trailblazer between Trax and Equinox in Chevy's ladder.

Trailblazer recalls to clear by VIN

We pulled NHTSA recall data for 2021 through 2026 Trailblazer this morning, October 15, 2026. Campaign 20V537000 covers certain 2021 Trailblazer vehicles (shared with 2020 Encore GX) whose front-seat rear attachment bolts may not have been installed -- that is a hard stop until a dealer confirms the fix. Campaign 20V295000 is a tire certification-label problem on some 2021 cars with optional 17-inch sport terrain tires. Campaign 20V588000 covers certain 2021 Trailblazer cars for electronic brake-boost sensor contamination that can interrupt communication.

Campaign 21V440000 hits some 2021-2022 Trailblazer and Encore GX vehicles for an emergency jack that can fracture if you position it wrong. For newer cars, campaign 26V539000 covers certain 2024-2026 Trailblazer models (plus Envista, Encore GX, and Trax) whose rearview camera screen may go blank. Start with the NHTSA recalls feed for the 2021 Trailblazer, change the year, then follow our Chevy recall check by VIN steps so you are not guessing from a brochure.

On a test drive, separate the CVT cars from the nine-speed AWD cars. For CVT, feel shudder off the line and rubber-band flare. For the nine-speed, MotorTrend wished for quicker downshifts when passing, so try a highway merge. Confirm AWD if the window sticker claims it. Decode the VIN with NHTSA's vPIC tool or our Chevrolet VIN decoder so engine and year match the ad -- and so you are not looking at an old TrailBlazer listing with a reused name.

Title, rental history, and the report

We've seen plenty of early Trailblazer ads with rental or fleet flags. A former rental is not automatic junk, but more drivers usually means a harder life for the CVT or the small turbo, so price it that way. Our note on rental car history on CARFAX shows how that line appears. Match dash, door, and title VINs before you talk money.

On cost, a CARFAX through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, while retail sits around $39.99 to $44.99 as of mid October 2026. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. One blunt warning: skip "$1 trial" report sites that roll into a monthly charge, and never treat a seller's PDF as proof. Pull a real CARFAX report on the VIN yourself.
