Used Honda HR-V Buying Guide: 2016-2022 vs 2023+, CVT, Recalls and History

What to check on a used Honda HR-V: the Fit-based 2016-2022 car with the Magic Seat vs the Civic-based 2023-and-newer 2.0, how to judge the CVT, the 23V-858 fuel pump, 24V-384 camera and 24V-744 steering recalls, and title history.

Used Honda HR-V Buying Guide: 2016-2022 vs 2023+, CVT, Recalls and History

A used Honda HR-V comes in two very different versions. The 2016-2022 HR-V is Fit-based, with a 1.8-liter four, a CVT or (on some front-drive cars) a manual, and the flip-up Magic Seat in back. The 2023-and-newer HR-V shares its platform with the Civic and uses a 158-hp 2.0-liter four with a CVT. Decide which one you want, confirm the open recalls by VIN (fuel pump, backup camera, passenger seat sensor, and the steering gearbox on 2023-and-newer cars), drive it long enough to judge the CVT, then check title and history.

We decoded HR-V VIN patterns in NHTSA's vPIC decoder on October 13, 2026, and every pattern from 2016 through 2026 came back built by Honda de Mexico in Celaya, Guanajuato. So the plant is not a variable here. What changed is the engine: our 2016, 2019 and 2022 patterns returned the R18Z9 1.8-liter, and our 2023, 2024 and 2026 patterns returned the K20Z5 2.0-liter, all with a CVT. The first five VIN characters, 3CZRU on the older car and 3CZRZ on the newer one in our samples, are a quick tell, and our Honda VIN decoder covers the rest of the positions.

2016-2022: the Fit-based HR-V

The first-generation HR-V is the practical one, and the back seat is the reason. When Car and Driver tested a 2016, it described the HR-V as based on the Fit, with the Fit's "Magic" rear seats and 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space folded flat, and an engine borrowed from the Civic: a 1.8-liter four rated at 141 hp. It also called the car not particularly sprightly, which matches what you feel merging with four people aboard. On a test drive, flip the rear seat cushions up and fold the seatbacks down, both sides, because broken latches and torn seat fabric are easy to miss on a quick lot walk. MotorTrend's 2016 HR-V page notes a six-speed manual was offered on front-drive cars, with AWD cars CVT-only, so ask which drivetrain you are looking at before you compare prices.

2023 and newer: Civic underneath

The 2023 redesign is a bigger, more grown-up car, but it is not quicker. Car and Driver's current HR-V page says the U.S. car gets one powertrain, a 158-hp 2.0-liter four shared with the base Civic, paired with a CVT, and that the platform is shared with the Civic too. It also says the engine and CVT make for slow acceleration and unpleasant sounds when pushed. So the test drive matters: merge onto a highway, then hold steady throttle uphill. Honestly, some drone is normal for this car; shudder, slipping or a warning light is not. If you are deciding between the newer HR-V and something a size up, our used Honda CR-V buying guide and used Mazda CX-5 buying guide cover those.

Recalls to confirm by VIN

HR-V recalls are mostly shared Honda campaigns, and a few are big. Recall 23V-858 covers about 2.5 million Hondas and Acuras, HR-Vs included, whose in-tank fuel pump may fail; it expanded the earlier 20V-314 and 21V-215 campaigns, and dealers replace the pump module. On 2019-2022 HR-Vs, recall 24V-384 says the backup camera image may not appear when the car is started with a key. It replaced 23V-046, and cars fixed under that first campaign need the new repair, so a "done" stamp from 2023 is not the end of it. On 2023-and-newer HR-Vs, recall 24V-744 covers about 1.7 million Hondas and Acuras whose steering gearbox can build excess internal friction and make steering difficult; dealers replace a worm gear spring and add grease.

There is also a passenger seat weight sensor problem across many Hondas. Recall 24V-064 covered 2020-2022 HR-Vs among others, and in May 2026 Honda filed 26V-332, which lists 2019-2021 HR-Vs and says a cracked sensor can make the air bags deploy unintentionally in a crash; owner letters went out July 7, 2026. Older 2016 and 2018-2019 cars also had a rear brake caliper recall, 18V-777, fixed by bleeding the brakes. Look up the exact VIN; our post on checking recalls by VIN walks through it, or use Honda's recall lookup.

Title, history and what to pay for

Look for curb rash, mismatched paint on the front or rear fascia, and front-end repairs in the history, then compare what you see to what the report says. A minor accident is not a dealbreaker, but structural damage or airbag deployment is. CARFAX says its reports can show title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. Run it yourself; a seller's PDF can be edited, and a doctored copy can quietly drop a flood or salvage brand. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail.
