For a used Hyundai Elantra, the 2021-and-newer car is the one to target: it was a clean-sheet redesign that added the first Elantra Hybrid, the N Line and later the Elantra N. The 2017-2020 car is cheaper, but check two things by VIN before you buy it. First is the 2019-2020 2.0-liter piston ring recall (21V-301). Second is whether a key-start car got Hyundai's anti-theft software. A history report for theft recovery and title brands comes after that.
We ran Elantra VIN patterns through NHTSA's vPIC decoder on October 13, 2026, and the first character tells you where the car came from. A 2017 pattern starting 5NPD84LF decoded to Hyundai's plant in Montgomery, Alabama, while a 2019 starting KMHD84LF decoded to Ulsan, Korea with the 2.0-liter Nu MPI engine. Newer cars do the same thing: 5NPLM4AG for Alabama and KMHLM4AG for Ulsan, both with the 2.0-liter Nu. The rest of the positions are covered in our Hyundai VIN decoder.
Which generation to buy
The 2017 car was a full redesign. Car and Driver's 2017 Elantra page lists a 147-hp 2.0-liter four and a 128-hp 1.4-liter turbo in the Eco. For 2021, Car and Driver called it a clean-sheet redesign with the first hybrid Elantra, an N Line, and a carryover 147-hp 2.0 paired with a CVT. The current lineup, per its main Elantra page, runs from that 147-hp base car to a 201-hp turbo N Line and a 139-hp hybrid, with a 5-year/60,000-mile limited warranty listed. A 2021 hybrid pattern starting KMHLN4AJ decoded with the 1.6-liter Kappa GDI engine. The Elantra N is its own thing. A 2022 N pattern starting KMHLW4AK decoded as a 2.0-liter T-GDI Theta II, and Car and Driver's N page lists 276 hp, or 286 with N Grin Shift on the dual-clutch car, with a 6-speed manual or 8-speed DCT. So if you find a cheap N with no paperwork, assume it has seen track days until a service history says otherwise, and budget for tires, brakes and a clutch or DCT inspection.
The 2.0-liter piston ring recall
Recall 21V-301 covered 158,493 2019-2020 Elantra and 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles with the 2.0-liter Nu MPI engine, because the piston oil rings may not have been heat-treated properly, which can damage the engine. Dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed, and they also install piston noise sensing software. Owner letters went out August 24, 2021. Look, on a 2019 or 2020 Elantra with the 2.0, ask for the recall paperwork with the VIN on it, and check oil consumption at the inspection. An engine that already burns oil is a negotiation point at best and a walk-away at worst. Our Hyundai-Kia engine recall check covers how to confirm engine campaigns by VIN.
The newer car has smaller items. Recall 22V-632 covered 247 2022 Elantra N and 2022-2023 Elantra cars for a driver air bag cover emblem issue, and recall 16V-956 covered 110 2017 cars for a driver air bag inflator seal. Small numbers, but a VIN check takes seconds.
Theft risk on key-start cars
This is the honest downside of a cheap Elantra. Hyundai's Campaign 993 service bulletin rolled out anti-theft software for vehicles without an immobilizer, starting February 13, 2023 with Phase 1, which included 2017-2020 Elantra, 2015-2019 Sonata and 2020-2021 Venue, and later phases listed 2011-2016 and 2021-2022 Elantra. Hyundai's owner page says a Hyundai with push-button start, or one produced after November 2021, has an engine immobilizer and is not affected. So with a turn-key Elantra, ask whether the software update was done and get the dealer record. A car that was stolen and recovered can carry an insurance claim and a repair history you will want to read, and our post on Kia and Hyundai theft recovery titles covers what that looks like on paper.
History report and price
A decode tells you the plant and engine. It cannot tell you about the 2022 fender bender or the rental-fleet first owner. CARFAX says its reports pull DMV, insurance and service records, so order your own instead of trusting a printout from the lot. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. If you are cross-shopping, our used Toyota Corolla buying guide covers the obvious rival.
