A used Jeep Cherokee here means the compact KL Cherokee sold for 2014-2023, not the larger Grand Cherokee and not the 2026 hybrid that just brought the name back. You will find a 2.4-liter four, a 3.2-liter V6, and from 2019 a 2.0-liter turbo, all with a nine-speed automatic. Before price, run the VIN for the power transfer unit (PTU) recall chain that now reaches 2014-2023 trucks and for liftgate fire recall 23V-338 on 2014-2016 Cherokees.
We pulled Cherokee recall filings and reviews on October 14, 2026. Consumer Reports lists 2014 as the redesign year and 2023 as the final year of this generation. Car and Driver reported that Stellantis would idle the Belvidere, Illinois plant that built it at the end of February 2023. Our vPIC patterns agree with that history: a 2014 Latitude decoded to Toledo North Assembly in Ohio, while 2019 Limited and 2022 Trailhawk patterns decoded to Belvidere. Decode yours with our Jeep VIN decoder. If you actually want the bigger two-row truck, the used Jeep Grand Cherokee buying guide is a different checklist.
2014-2018 versus the 2019-2023 refresh
CR's verdict on the early trucks is blunt: the 2.4-liter four is slow and averaged just 22 mpg overall in its testing, the nine-speed automatic is not all that responsive, and if you want one, get the 3.2-liter V6. CR says the Trailhawk is very capable off-road and the V6 can tow 4,500 pounds. The 2019 refresh added the 2.0-liter turbo and new front styling, and Car and Driver's 2019 review lists it at 270 hp and 295 lb-ft, with 4,000 pounds of towing versus 4,500 for the V6. CR adds that 2021 made forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning standard. If it were our money, we would buy a 2021-2023 V6 or 2.0 turbo with the PTU work documented, and an early 2.4 only makes sense when it is priced like an early 2.4.
The PTU recall chain, in order
The PTU sits between the transmission and the differential, and if its input splines wear off, the truck can lose drive while moving and lose Park while stopped. 20V-343 covers 2014-2017 Cherokees with the two-speed PTU and added software that engages rear-wheel drive and the electric parking brake if the splines fail. 23V-302 expanded it to more 2016-2017 trucks. 25V-011 covers 2017-2019 Cherokees, with a software update and PTU replacement as necessary. The newest, 26V-290, covers about 61,711 2019-2023 Cherokees. FCA mailed interim letters on June 25, 2026 and said more letters would follow once the final remedy is ready, so check the VIN for current status instead of trusting a seller's "it was done."
Liftgate fire, transmission and other campaigns
23V-338 covers about 132,099 2014-2016 Cherokees with a power liftgate whose module can short and start a fire with the ignition on or off. Owners were told to park outside until the repair, and the filing says trucks fixed under the older 15V-393 and 15V-826 campaigns still need the new remedy. 16V-529 covers 2014-2015 Cherokees whose nine-speed sensor wiring crimps can make the transmission shift to neutral. 15V-041 covers 2014-2015 trucks that could deploy side curtain and seat air bags unexpectedly. Smaller ones: 19V-637 for broken steering rack gears on some 2019-2020 trucks, and 20V-657 for 2021 front lower control arms that may fracture, with a do-not-drive note. Our NHTSA recall check by VIN guide explains each status.
Title, history and price
Recall lookups do not show accidents, flood titles, odometer jumps or rental use. Read the ownership lines too, since rental or fleet use changes how hard the truck was driven. CARFAX says its reports pull title brands, odometer readings, ownership and reported accidents. Honestly, a Trailhawk with off-road scrapes and no service records is a gamble even with a clean title. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
