Used Jeep Wagoneer Buying Guide: Hemi vs Hurricane and Recalls

A used Jeep Wagoneer (WS body, 2022 and newer) is worth a look if you need a full-size three-row SUV with serious tow ratings and you can tell it apart from the pricier Grand Wagoneer parked next to it. Early cars run the 5.7 Hemi; later ones move to the 3.0 Hurricane twin-turbo six. Pull recalls by VIN before you fall for a loaded Series III with open airbag campaigns.

Look, these SUVs share a lot of sheet metal and marketing photos with Grand Wagoneer, and sellers blur the names on purpose. Our used Jeep Grand Wagoneer buying guide covers the luxury twin. This page is only the regular Wagoneer. I checked Car and Driver year pages and the NHTSA recalls API on the morning of October 16, 2026, so the engine timeline and campaign numbers below are from those sources, not a forum spreadsheet.

Wagoneer vs Grand Wagoneer in one minute

Both wear the WS architecture and seat up to eight. Grand Wagoneer is the higher-trim, higher-price sibling with richer materials and, historically, the bigger V8 options. Wagoneer is the volume family hauler. If the window sticker or build sheet says Grand, you are shopping the wrong guide. Decode the VIN with our Jeep VIN decoder so you are not bidding on the wrong badge.

5.7 Hemi years vs Hurricane years

Per Car and Driver's 2022 Wagoneer review, the launch powertrain was a 392-hp 5.7-liter V8 with a 48-volt eTorque assist, eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive standard, and optional four-wheel drive. C/D's tested 4x4 hit 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and was rated to tow up to 10,000 pounds. EPA numbers on that review sat around 16/22 mpg RWD and 15/20 mpg 4WD. Optional Quadra-Lift air suspension could raise ride height for off-pavement work.

Car and Driver's 2024 engine note says the Wagoneer dropped the Hemi V8 for 2024 and standardized on the Hurricane twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six at 420 hp for the regular Wagoneer. The Hurricane showed up during the 2023 model year on more trims, then became the only engine for 2024. Stellantis also publicized the Hurricane Wagoneer when Four Wheeler named it SUV of the Year. On a used lot in mid October 2026, a 2022-early 2023 with the Hemi and a 2024 Hurricane are different ownership bets: V8 parts familiarity versus newer turbo plumbing and software.

If the car has air suspension, ask for proof of any Rapid Service Update work. Early 2022 Quadra-Lift trucks showed up in dealer bulletins for compressor line leaks and loose connectors that throw a "Service Air Suspension" message. That is a service campaign story, not something to ignore on a test drive. Cycle the heights, listen for the compressor, and walk if the truck sits low with a warning lamp.

Recalls you should clear before writing a check

I ran the NHTSA recalls API for 2022 Wagoneer and the 2023-2024 rows the same morning. Campaigns that keep coming up:

  • 23V545 (2022-2023): upper B-pillar interior trim may not seat fully and can interfere with side curtain airbag deployment. Consumer Reports summarized the problem and the build window.
  • 24V199 (2023-2024 among other models): steering column control module weld issue can keep the driver airbag from getting a deployment signal. See the NHTSA advanced communication PDF.
  • 23V716 (2022-2024): third-row seat belts may be hard to access or fasten properly.
  • Camera / rearview software campaigns (several numbers): rear image may fail to display. That matters on a tall SUV you cannot see behind.

Finish the check with our Jeep recall check by VIN workflow. Open campaigns are free at the dealer; unfinished ones are a negotiation chip.

What the history report should answer

These trucks are heavy, expensive to insure, and popular with families who haul boats. Look for repeated body-shop visits, air-suspension replacements, and flood or salvage brands after hurricanes. A free NMVTIS search catches many state brands. Sellers who push a "CARFAX clean" screenshot are not proof of anything. CarVins resells CARFAX and AutoCheck under license with no affiliation to those brands or Experian. Expect guest pricing near $5.50, member near $4.50, and a bundle near $6.75, versus direct retail often listed around $39.99-$44.99. Numbers shift, so confirm before you pay. CARFAX's report overview shows what each section can and cannot prove.

Suburban, Expedition, or Wagoneer?

If you want a Chevy parts-counter experience, read our used Chevy Suburban buying guide. Prefer Ford dealer density and EcoBoost math? Start with the used Ford Expedition guide. Wagoneer wins on cabin tech and Jeep tow marketing. It loses if you need a used market thick with $8,000 engines and independent shops that have seen every Hemi quirk for thirty years.
