Used Kia EV9 Buying Guide: Battery Recall, Trims and Range by Year

On a used 2024 Kia EV9, do not sign anything until a VIN lookup shows whether high-voltage battery recall 26V431 (Kia SC375) applies and has been done, because the fix is a replacement battery and the interim advice is to park outside and charge no higher than 80 percent. If you would rather skip that whole conversation, a 2025 EV9 is the easier used buy, and the trim to target for most families is a Light Long Range or any AWD car with the big 99.8-kWh pack.

The EV9 is a three-row electric SUV about the size of a Telluride, and Car and Driver liked it enough to put the 2024 on its 10Best list. That reputation is earned. It is also why some sellers price a 2024 like nothing ever happened to it, and since Kia filed a battery recall in July 2026, something did.

Which EV9 trim has which battery

Trim names on the EV9 actually matter for range, so read the window sticker or the VIN, not the ad title. According to C/D's 2024 EV9 review, the base rear-drive Light uses a 76.1-kWh pack and a 215-hp motor and is rated at 230 miles. The Light Long Range is also rear-drive but gets the 99.8-kWh pack and 304 miles, even though power drops to 201 hp. Wind and Land are dual-motor AWD with 379 hp and 280 miles, and the GT-Line is rated at 270.

Real highway driving knocks those down. C/D's GT-Line went 240 miles on its 75-mph test, and its AWD test car hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The good news is charging. Every EV9 uses an 800-volt system, and C/D measured an average of 139 kW from 10 to 90 percent, which took 37 minutes. Towing is rated at 5,000 pounds, same as the Telluride. If you do not need the third row, the smaller used Kia EV6 shares a lot of the hardware for less money; if you need three rows and long trips with no planning, the gas used Kia Telluride is still the simpler choice.

2024 vs 2025 vs 2026

The model years look nearly identical, and that is mostly true. The 2025 review lists only small changes: a standard sunroof on the Light Long Range and some color swaps. It also notes Kia was sending NACS charging adapters to buyers who bought a CCS-port EV9 on or after September 4, 2024, so ask whether the adapter comes with the car. For 2026, C/D says every EV9 got a NACS port with an adapter for CCS chargers, and the 501-hp GT that had been announced was postponed indefinitely. So a "GT" in a used listing is almost always a GT-Line.

Recalls we found by model year

We ran the NHTSA recalls API for 2024, 2025 and 2026 on October 15, 2026, and the 2024 list is the long one. The big entry is 26V431, which covers 2022-2024 EV6 and 2024 EV9 cars whose battery cells may have misaligned electrodes that can lead to a fire while parked or driving. Dealers replace the high-voltage battery assembly. The record said letters were expected to go out August 7, 2026, so plenty of 2024 cars on lots right now may still be waiting.

The rest of the 2024 list is less scary but still worth closing. 24V271 replaced the gear drive unit over differential bolts that may not be tight, which can mean a loss of drive power. 24V338 replaced the front passenger seat belt, 24V400 replaced headliner impact plates, and 24V693 updated brake software so remote smart parking assist judges stopping distances correctly. 24V757 (instrument screen software) and 24V962 (missing second- and third-row seat mounting bolts) also cover 2025 cars.

The 2025 list adds 25V115, a rear drive unit motor shaft that may be badly welded and fail, and 26V545, an occupant detection mat that may not turn off the passenger air bag for a child seat. the record says letters for that one begin October 20, 2026, so it is fresh. 2026 cars share 26V545 and have an instrument display software recall, 26V046. Run the actual car through our Kia recall check by VIN steps, since only the VIN tells you what is open.

Warranty and battery checks

Kia's warranty page lists EV system coverage, which includes the motor, high-voltage battery and on-board charger, at 10 years or 100,000 miles from first service, with battery coverage for capacity loss below 70 percent. The same page limits the 10-year powertrain warranty to the original buyer and CPO buyers, so have a Kia dealer confirm in writing what the EV coverage looks like for you as a second owner. Look, asking costs you nothing, and guessing could cost you a battery.

On the drive, charge to a known level and compare the estimate to the ratings above, keeping in mind cold weather cuts range. Decode the VIN with our Kia VIN decoder notes so a Light is not being sold as a Light Long Range, and read up on used EV battery recalls before you buy any 2024.

The history report is where a replaced battery, a body shop visit, or a fleet past will usually show up. Ours runs about $5.50 for a CARFAX as a guest and about $4.50 for members, or about $6.75 with AutoCheck added, compared with the $39.99 to $44.99 range you see retail; confirm at checkout, since prices change.
