A used Kia K5 is a solid midsize sedan buy in mid October 2026 if you pick the right engine and clear the recalls first. Most 2021-2024 cars run a 180-hp 1.6-liter turbo, 2025-on cars switched to a 191-hp non-turbo 2.5, and the GT uses a 290-hp 2.5 turbo with a dual-clutch box. Run the VIN against NHTSA's recall list, confirm if you actually get the long powertrain warranty, and check for rental history before you put down a deposit.
The K5 replaced the Optima for 2021. MotorTrend's 2021 review notes it moved to the same N3 platform as the Hyundai Sonata and kept production in Georgia. It is a different car from the last Optima, so if you are weighing one against the other, our used Kia Optima buying guide covers the older car's issues separately. Don't let a listing that says "Optima/K5" blur the two together.
Which K5 engine you are actually buying
The trim badge tells you most of what you need to know about the engine. On 2021-2024 cars, MotorTrend lists LX, LXS, GT-Line, and EX trims with the 1.6-liter turbo four (180 hp, 195 lb-ft) and an eight-speed automatic, and AWD was offered only with that base engine. For 2025 Kia dropped the 1.6 turbo, and MotorTrend's 2025 coverage lists the new 2.5-liter at 191 hp and 181 lb-ft. EPA listings on fueleconomy.gov show the same split, with the 2021 1.6 FWD rated up to 32 mpg combined.
The GT is its own animal. Car and Driver tested a 2021 K5 GT at 5.2 seconds to 60 mph, with a 290-hp turbo 2.5 and an eight-speed dual-clutch, front-wheel drive only. That makes it the fun one, and also the one most likely to have been driven hard. So if you want AWD for snow, you are shopping a non-GT car. If you want the GT, budget for tires, because those 19-inch all-seasons wear fast on a car that can do that.
Recalls to clear by VIN
We pulled NHTSA's recall data for 2021 through 2026 K5s on October 14, 2026, and the list is longer than most sellers will mention. The fuel-system items are the ones we would push hardest on. Campaign 21V-519 covers 2021-2022 K5s with the 2.5 turbo, where fuel can leak at the joint between the high-pressure pump and the fuel rail. Campaign 25V-794 covers 2021-2024 K5s where a damaged check valve can let the fuel tank expand into hot exhaust parts and melt. Both are fire risks, and NHTSA describes them that way.
Other campaigns on the NHTSA recalls API include 22V-760 (2021-2023 cars whose transmission fail-safe mode may not work after an oil pump fault, leading to a loss of drive power), 23V-149 (2021-2023 side curtain air bags that may have been installed incorrectly), 21V-447 (2021-2022 2.5 turbo cars with a steering assist fault when Lane Following Assist is on), and 21V-164 (2021 passenger occupant sensors). Newer cars show 25V-493 for rear window trim that can come loose on 2023-2025 cars and 25V-351 for 2025 parking light flicker. Our Kia recall check by VIN page walks through how to see which of these apply to one specific car, because not every campaign covers every VIN in a model year.
Warranty: the part sellers get wrong
Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage is a big selling point, but it does not follow the car to every owner. Kia's warranty page says the powertrain limited warranty applies to the original purchaser and to a buyer of a Certified Pre-Owned Kia. A private-party K5 or a non-certified dealer car will usually leave you with whatever is left of the 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage instead. If a dealer ad says "10-year warranty" on a non-certified car, ask for it in writing or assume it is not there.
Decode the VIN, then read the history
Start with the VIN itself. Match the dash plate, door sticker, and title, then run it through NHTSA's vPIC decoder to confirm the engine and drive type match the listing. A "GT" that decodes as a 1.6 is a red flag, and so is an AWD car that decodes as FWD. Our Kia VIN decoder guide explains what each position means for Kia specifically.
Then pull a history report. Midsize sedans get bought by rental and fleet buyers, so check the ownership type on the report. That is not automatically bad, but you want to know. CARFAX reports cover title brands, odometer records, ownership type, and reported accidents. Read our CARFAX rental history piece before you decide a former rental is a deal-breaker. Honestly, a short rental stint with clean service records can be fine. A salvage or flood brand that the seller calls "just paperwork" is not.
Money-wise, a CARFAX through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail as of mid October 2026. Prices move, so confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Do not accept a seller's PDF in place of your own report; an edited PDF takes five minutes to fake.
On the test drive
On a 1.6 turbo car, pay attention to how the eight-speed shifts from a stop and whether there is any shudder or hesitation, and ask whether the 22V-760 transmission campaign has been done. On a GT, the dual-clutch can feel a bit lumpy in parking-lot crawling, which is normal to a point, but harsh engagement or warning lights are not. Look under the rear for any fuel smell or signs of a tank repair. Check that the rear window trim is tight on 2023-on cars. If you want a second opinion on the same platform, our used Hyundai Sonata buying guide is a useful comparison, and the used car VIN check checklist keeps the paperwork steps in order.
