For most people, the right used Kia Rondo is a V6 car from 2009 or 2010 with the third row, and with the stop lamp switch and clock spring recalls signed off. The Rondo was sold in the U.S. for 2007 through 2010 as a front-drive wagon that could seat seven, and Consumer Guide found the four-cylinder struggles when you merge or pass. If you need AWD, skip it, because Kia never offered it. A 2010 also carries a newer fire recall, and that one matters more than anything else on this list.
I pulled every Rondo model year from NHTSA's recall API on Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2026, and read Consumer Guide's 2007-10 Rondo review for engines, equipment and known faults. That's it, so anything a seller tells you beyond this, like "never had a problem," deserves proof on paper.
Engines and years
Kia built the Rondo in South Korea on its Optima sedan platform, in LX and EX trims, each with a four or a V6. For 2007-2008 the 2.4-liter four made 162 hp and came with a four-speed automatic, while the 2.7-liter V6 made 182 hp with a five-speed. For 2009 those rose to 175 hp and 192 hp, and a four-cylinder-only Base trim arrived. The third-row bench was optional until 2010, when it became standard and a rearview camera joined the options list. Every Rondo had antilock brakes, stability control and curtain airbags covering all three rows, which was generous for a cheap car back then.
Consumer Guide says the four sounds coarse at moderate to full throttle and the V6 is more refined, though only modestly quicker. The fuel economy gap is small. EPA figures for 2008 were 19/26 mpg for the four and 18/26 for the V6, and an extended-use EX V6 averaged 20.6 mpg in its testing. So I'd pay a bit extra for the V6 unless the four-cylinder car is clearly in better shape.
Recalls to confirm
- 13V114, 2007-2010: the stop lamp switch can fail, so brake lights may not work, cruise control may not cancel, and the shifter may leave Park without your foot on the brake. Kia's number is SC098. An earlier stop lamp switch recall, 09V130, also lists 2007 Rondos.
- 12V014, 2007-2008: the clock spring for the driver's air bag can wear and raise circuit resistance, so the air bag might not deploy in a crash. It covers Rondos built from September 13, 2006 through March 21, 2008.
- 08V459, 2008-2009 with the 2.4: a fuel pump problem can cause hard starting and hesitation. The campaign covered 6,680 LX and EX cars.
- 23V652, 2010: the ABS hydraulic control unit can short and start an engine compartment fire, parked or driving. Kia told owners to park outside until the fix, a new fuse, was done. Owner letters went out from March through June 2024, so plenty of cars may still be open.
A cheap seven-seater that has bounced between owners is exactly the sort of car that misses recall mail. Run the VIN through our Kia recall check by VIN, then call a Kia service desk to confirm. The Kia VIN decoder guide helps you confirm engine and model year before you rely on the list above.
What else to look for
Consumer Guide flags three service issues. A 2.4 that's hard to start, or won't start, may have a throttle stuck shut by deposits. A 2009 that knocks from the front end on rough roads may just need its upper strut mount bolts torqued to a higher spec. On 2007 V6 cars, a check engine light can come from a bad intake air temperature reading that a computer update fixes. Look at the big rear doors too. They make getting kids in easy, but Consumer Guide calls them cumbersome in tight parking spots, so if you park in a narrow garage, test that before you buy. Thick rear pillars also block the over-the-shoulder view, and that's one reason I'd lean toward a 2010 with the optional camera.
Rondo vs Sedona, Optima and the Mazda5
If you need real minivan space, the Sedona is the bigger Kia, and our used Kia Sedona guide covers its own weak spots. If you mostly carry four people, the Optima the Rondo was built from is the more common car, and our used Kia Optima guide walks through those years. Consumer Guide lists the Mazda5 as a Rondo rival. It has sliding doors, but its third row is tight too, so pick by condition and price, not by brochure.
Before money changes hands
Fake seller printouts and washed titles are the risk on cars this cheap. Search the VIN on NMVTIS, then pull your own history report so you're not leaning on whatever the seller hands over. We resell CARFAX and AutoCheck reports under license and have no affiliation with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Kia. In mid October 2026, expect about $5.50 for a guest report, around $4.50 as a member, and close to $6.75 for both together, while retail runs roughly $39.99 to $44.99. Your final price shows at checkout, so check it there before paying.
