The Alero was the last Oldsmobile and is now a cheap used car. Check the ignition key recall, early leaks and its Poor IIHS frontal rating first.

Used Oldsmobile Alero Buying Guide: 1999-2004 Engines, Recalls, Risks

A used Oldsmobile Alero (1999-2004) makes sense only at a beater price, roughly the $1,500 to $4,400 range Consumer Guide lists, and only after the VIN shows the GM key-ring ignition recall (14V400) closed. The best of them are 2002-2004 GL cars with the 2.2 four or GLS cars with the 3.4 V6 and a stack of receipts. Know going in that IIHS rated this platform Poor in its frontal offset test, and that Oldsmobile itself has been gone since 2004.

That last part is why the Alero deserves its own guide instead of a footnote. It shares its bones with a far more common car, but it was the final Oldsmobile, and a few people pay silly money for the right one. Most buyers just want cheap transport, though. I read Consumer Guide's 1999-04 Alero review, the IIHS rating and NHTSA's recall list for each year on Monday, October 19, 2026.

Alero vs. Grand Am: same platform, different car

Consumer Guide says Oldsmobile launched the Alero coupe and sedan for 1999 to replace the slow-selling Achieva, with its basic design shared with the Pontiac Grand Am. Our used Pontiac Grand Am buying guide covers the shared hardware in depth, so I'll stick to what's different here. Consumer Guide found the Alero felt more mature than its Pontiac cousin, and it came with more standard equipment. At launch every Alero had four-wheel disc ABS and traction control as standard, and GL and GLS models had a tire-pressure monitor. Trims ran GX, GL and GLS, with GL1, GL2 and GL3 sub-levels for 2000.

That standard ABS didn't last. Consumer Guide says 2003 deleted standard antilock brakes on lower-line models, so a 2003 or 2004 GX or GL may not have it. Check the dash for the ABS light at key-on.

Engines by year

  • 1999-2001: 150-hp 2.4-liter dual-cam four in GX and GL. Consumer Guide calls it strong but unrefined, vibrating at idle.
  • 2002-2004: a 140-hp 2.2-liter four replaced the 2.4 in GX and GL1. EPA ratings were 25/33 with the manual.
  • All years: a 170-hp 3.4-liter V6, standard on GLS and optional on GL, automatic only. Expect torque steer under hard throttle.
  • 2000 on: a Getrag five-speed manual became available on four-cylinder cars.

A V6 car with a manual is a swap or a typo. Our Oldsmobile VIN decoder guide shows how to read the engine from the VIN before you trust the listing.

Where the money goes

Consumer Guide's trouble list is all early cars. On 1999-2000 Aleros, brake pulsation came from faulty pads and rotors, a failed clamp could let the heater hose pop off its inlet, and a bad door gasket could leak water onto the floor. The 1999 rear spoiler could warp in the sun and let water in. None of that shows up on a history report. Pull up the carpet edge for damp padding, and look at the heater hoses with the engine warm. On a car this cheap, one big repair wipes out the value. A $2,000 Alero needing $1,500 in brakes, hoses and a clutch is a bad buy, not a project.

Recalls to clear

14V400 covers every 1999-2004 Alero and is part of a recall of 5,877,718 GM cars. Weight on the key ring or a jolt can knock the ignition out of run, and if that happens in a crash the air bags may not deploy. The fix is two key rings and an insert or cover for the key head; until it's done, GM told owners to carry only the ignition key on the ring. Our GM ignition switch recall check explains what paperwork to ask for.

The smaller ones: a steering wheel nut that may not be tight (1999), a console lid that may not stay shut in a crash (1999-2000), a manual-transmission shift inhibitor that can leave the car in fourth when the lever shows reverse (2000-2001), hazard switch solder cracks that kill the turn signals (2000-2001), a manual supplement for child seat anchors (2001) and an accelerator pedal that can stick in hot weather (2003). NHTSA also lists an aftermarket Delphi fuel pressure regulator campaign that only matters if one was installed. Our Oldsmobile recall check by VIN walkthrough covers getting an answer when the brand's dealers no longer exist.

Crash rating

IIHS tested a 1999 Grand Am SE and applies the result to 1999-2004 Aleros. The moderate overlap frontal rating is Poor. The driver door bowed outward, the dummy's head hit the window sill and then the B-pillar, and the steering wheel moved up too much. Consumer Guide's NHTSA data for a 1999 Alero coupe shows a one-star driver rating in the side test, too. I wouldn't hand this car to a new driver.

The Final 500 and the end of Oldsmobile

GM announced the Oldsmobile phaseout in December 2001. On April 29, 2004, the last Oldsmobile, an Alero, rolled off the line at Lansing Car Assembly, as the AP reported via NBC News. The final 500 were dark cherry metallic collector editions with "Final 500" badges. If a seller wants extra money for one, ask for documentation, because badges can be bolted on.
