A used Pontiac Aztek is a 2001-2005 crossover built on GM's minivan bones, with one engine (a 185-hp 3.4-liter V6), a four-speed automatic, and front drive or Versatrak all-wheel drive. It can be a cheap, roomy, oddly practical buy if the fuel tank recall is done on 2001-2004 trucks and the under-seat wiring isn't corroded. It is not an off-roader, its crash scores are mediocre, and no history report will tell you whether the famous tent is still in the back.
I'll admit the Aztek has grown on me. Twenty years ago it was the punchline. Now the youngest one is a 2005, and if you're shopping one in October 2026 you probably want a cheap hauler with a giant cargo hold, or you just think it's funny. Both are fine reasons. Below is what Consumer Guide's 2001-05 Aztek review, the IIHS file and NHTSA's recall database actually say, checked Sunday, October 18, 2026.
What you're actually buying
Pontiac put the Aztek on sale in summer 2000 as a 2001 model, in base and GT trim, front-drive only at first. Consumer Guide describes it as loosely based on the Montana minivan, with the same 3.4-liter V6 and a mandatory automatic. All-wheel drive arrived during the 2001 season. It shuffles power to the wheels with traction, has no low range, and swaps the rear drums for discs. Towing tops out at 3,500 pounds and ground clearance is 6.7 inches, so gravel roads yes, rock trails no. With the rear seats out, Consumer Guide measured 93.5 cubic feet of space, and a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood fits with the tailgate down.
The quirky stuff is real. A removable console doubles as a cooler, an optional slide-out cargo tray rolls out on its own wheels, and dealers sold a camping package with a clip-on tent and a fitted air mattress. Those were dealer accessories, so a report won't list them and a seller may not even know what the bag in the garage is.
Year-by-year
- 2001: base and GT. ABS and front side air bags standard. GT added traction control, 16-inch wheels and options like a head-up display and OnStar.
- 2002: GT dropped, body-color trim replaced most of the gray cladding, console cooler and CD standard.
- 2003: ABS and side air bags became options on front-drive models, not standard. DVD entertainment and XM radio joined the list.
- 2004: Rally Edition package with lowered suspension and 17-inch wheels.
- 2005: no changes, and the last year.
That 2003 change matters. A 2003-2005 front-drive Aztek may have no ABS or side bags at all. Our Pontiac VIN decoder guide helps on the drivetrain, but for the options, look for the side bag tag on the seat and the ABS light at startup.
Known problems and crash scores
Consumer Guide's trouble spots read like the Montana's. Water leaking onto the connector below the driver's seat corrodes it, causing no-starts, stalling or a fuel gauge that misreads (2001-02). Spill a drink in the console and the shift-indicator slide can get damaged so badly you can't shift out of Park, and GM released an improved replacement part for it. Early trucks could leak A/C condensate into the passenger footwell, and on 2001 models the wiper blades hit each other. On the road, CG liked the ride and quiet but found the thick rear pillars hurt over-the-shoulder visibility, and there was no rear wiper.
Safety is the weak spot. IIHS rates the 2001-05 Aztek Marginal in its original moderate overlap frontal test, and Consumer Guide lists NHTSA frontal scores of 3 stars for the driver and 4 for the passenger on a 2001. I wouldn't put a new teen driver in one.
Recalls that are still worth asking about
The big one is 07V349: on 2001-2004 Azteks, heat or manufacturing variation can crack the fuel tank inlet check valve, and dealers replace the whole tank. A separate 2004 recall, 03V454, covers a weld at that same check valve on listed tanks. 2003 trucks have 03V052, where the steering column intermediate shaft may be undersized, and Consumer Guide notes that can mean loss of steering control. 2004 trucks have 05V157 for contaminated ignition relay contacts that can cause intermittent stalling. For 2001, 01V026 and 02V329 cover passenger air bags built wrong. 07E021 is a Delphi aftermarket fuel regulator recall that only matters if that part was installed. Aztek or Buick Rendezvous?
The Rendezvous is the same idea with a 4-inch-longer wheelbase and body, which buys a third row: seven seats against the Aztek's five. It also kept going through 2007 and picked up a 245-hp 3.6-liter V6 for 2004 and a 3.5 for 2006, while every Aztek has the 3.4. What CARFAX won't show on an Aztek
A history report can show title brands, reported crashes, odometer readings and gaps in registration. It can't show whether the console cooler leaked into the shifter, whether the tent and mattress exist, or whether the AWD actually sends power rearward. Test that on wet grass. Check the title on NMVTIS and decode on NHTSA vPIC. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller with no affiliation to CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or GM; as of mid October 2026 our guest price has been about $5.50, members about $4.50 and the two-report bundle about $6.75, against about $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Treat those as ballpark until you see the checkout total.
