Used Range Rover Velar Buying Guide: 2018-2026 Years and Recalls

The Velar's 2021 update fixed its worst weak points, but not all of them. Which years to target, what C/D's long-term car went through, and the recalls to check.

Used Range Rover Velar Buying Guide: 2018-2026 Years and Recalls

Buy a 2021 or newer Range Rover Velar if the budget allows. That is the year the old twin-screen infotainment gave way to Pivi Pro and the gritty supercharged V6 was replaced by a mild-hybrid inline-six. The 2018 to 2020 cars are much cheaper, and there is a reason. Car and Driver's own 2018 long-term Velar needed a fuel-rail replacement and, later, a tow after an electrical fault left it stuck in park. A Velar can be a good used buy, but only with a full service file and a clear recall record.

I read C/D's Velar pages and its 40,000-mile test on Saturday, October 17, 2026, then pulled every model year from NHTSA's recall API. When I checked that afternoon, C/D's Land Rover index showed 2018 and 2019 Velars starting around $6,800, 2021s around $13,500 and 2024s around $31,700. Those listing-based figures move, but they show how hard these SUVs depreciate. A 2024 Velar P250 S started at $62,775 new.

Velar years and engines in the U.S.

The Velar arrived for 2018, sized between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport and built on the same bones as the Jaguar F-Pace. C/D's 2018 page lists three engines, all with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive: a 247-hp 2.0-liter turbo four, a 180-hp turbodiesel four and a 380-hp supercharged V6. C/D called all three "flawed." The diesel was dropped for 2020, the year a 550-hp V8 SV Autobiography Dynamic arrived; it was gone again for 2021.

The 2021 model is the split. The V6 was replaced by a turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter six with a 48-volt hybrid system, in 335-hp P340 and 395-hp P400 forms, and the Pivi Pro software arrived. The 2024 refresh brought a new grille and lights and a single 11.4-inch curved touchscreen, and C/D's 2024 spec sheet lists only P250 and P400 engines for the U.S. If a U.S. listing calls a Velar a plug-in hybrid, ask questions. Parkers in the U.K. reviews the P400e plug-in, but it is not on C/D's U.S. engine list.

What 40,000 miles in a Velar looked like

The C/D long-term wrap-up, updated October 24, 2019, does not hold back. Around 12,000 miles the 2.0-liter's fuel rail end caps started leaking, and the dealer replaced the rail and all four injectors under warranty. The dual-screen InControl Touch Pro Duo system froze and rebooted on the move until a software update at about 27,000 miles. Near 31,000 miles a broken wire in the telematics control unit immobilized the car in a staffer's driveway, and when the tow truck came, the rotary shifter would not leave park. Routine costs were modest: two oil services came to $461, though the dealer charged $187 for three wiper blades.

That was one car, not a reliability survey, but it should shape how you shop an early Velar. Ask for every dealer invoice, and have the inspecting shop plug in a scan tool.

Velar recalls by year

  • 2018: 18V087, the fuel rail end cap leak on 2.0-liter cars that C/D's test car had; 18V139, a ventilation linkage that can stop the windshield clearing; and 21V117 (2018-2020), an auto high beam indicator software fix.
  • 2019-2022: 19V040 (V6 and V8 crankshaft pulley bolt), 21V668 (2020-2021 child-seat locking retractors), 22V523 (front belt pretensioners) and 22V581 (2022 cars built without the audio amplifier, so no warning chimes).
  • 2023-2024: 23V044 (cam carrier oil channel), 24V450 (cracking oil filter housing) and 24V678 (a module that can overheat and blank the rear camera).
  • 2021-2024 DC-DC converter: 26V248 covers 170,169 JLR mild hybrids that can lose 12-volt charging and drive power. Only interim letters went out on June 17, 2026. Its expansion, 26V599, adds 23,677 vehicles with interim letters expected November 13, 2026. Neither record has a final fix yet.

My 2025 search returned nothing; 2026 showed one recall, 26V297, for a belt chime. Our used Range Rover Evoque guide covers the same converter campaigns from the smaller SUV's side. The difference here is that NHTSA describes the affected vehicles as mild hybrids, and on the U.S. Velar the mild-hybrid engine is the six. Have a dealer confirm your exact VIN.

Velar, Sport, Evoque or F-Pace

If you want more room, read our used Range Rover Sport buying guide. If you like the shape but would rather have a sharper drive, the used Jaguar F-Pace guide covers the platform cousin, which C/D says came with a stronger warranty and five years or 60,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance. The Velar had four years or 50,000 miles of coverage and no free maintenance. In C/D's tests it carried 10 carry-ons behind the rear seats, more than its rivals, and that remains its best practical argument.

Before paying, decode the VIN with our Land Rover VIN decoder post or NHTSA's vPIC, then follow our Land Rover recall check by VIN steps. Search NMVTIS for title brands and buy your own history report, since a cheap luxury SUV with an emailed clean PDF is a classic title-wash setup. CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or JLR. In mid October 2026 one report here is about $5.50 for guests or $4.50 for members, a bundle is about $6.75, and retail is roughly $39.99 to $44.99. Confirm the total at checkout.
