A used Scion xD is a 2008-14 subcompact hatch with a 128-horsepower 1.8-liter four, a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive. Consumer Guide liked fuel economy, controls and maneuverability, then dinged acceleration, rear-seat room and visibility. Toyota folded Scion after 2016, so service routes through Toyota dealers and Toyota-friendly independents.
Sources were Consumer Guide's 2008-14 Scion xD review, NHTSA recall queries for a 2010 xD run Nov. 5, 2026, and the NHTSA vPIC decoder. CG's good-condition band sat about $4,300 to $14,700 on that pull. Treat pricing as a Nov. 5, 2026 snapshot.
What the xD was
Scion sold the xD as the entry hatch after the xA. CG notes a longer wheelbase than the old xA in a similar footprint, with a tall greenhouse and a small cargo hold behind the rear seat. The 1.8-liter four made 128 horsepower. Manuals were the enthusiast pick; automatics were the volume commute car. Standard safety gear included the usual airbags and ABS for the class.
People bought these for mileage and city parking, not highway power. CG's EPA figures for the manuals and automatics sat in the mid-20s city and low-30s highway on the page I pulled. Cabin plastics are hard, and road noise climbs with speed. That is the trade for cheap used pricing.
What to inspect
Check for oil consumption and valve-cover seepage on higher-mile 1.8s. Automatics need clean shifts without flare; manuals need a clutch that still bites on a hill. Look at the rear hatch seals for water leaks, and open the spare well for rust or damp carpet. Aftermarket suspension and big exhausts often mean skipped alignments.
Visibility is a CG con, so check blind spots with a passenger before you buy. Seat bolsters wear early on cars that lived as delivery runners. A $120-$200 pre-purchase inspection that includes a compression test and a scan is cheap insurance at xD prices.
Recalls and VIN checks
A 2010 Scion xD returned NHTSA campaigns including 15V689000, 14V169000, 10V035000 and 10V036000 when queried Nov. 5, 2026. Several are Toyota-group filings that also name other models, so clear by VIN. Use our Scion recall check by VIN and Scion VIN decoder. Before you buy
Confirm the title on NMVTIS and pull your own history report. We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian, Scion or Toyota. As of early November 2026, guest reports are about $5.50, member reports about $4.50, and the bundle about $6.75, versus retail near $39.99 to $44.99. Confirm at checkout.
Budget for tires and a timing-belt or chain service interval check even if the seller swears the car "never needs anything."
Title brands, odometer gaps and salvage rebuilds show up on a report you buy yourself, even when the paint looks straight. Cross-check the VIN plate, door sticker and dashboard stamp so the car matches the paper before you wire a deposit.
Ask the seller for a cold start, a highway pull and a stop on a steep driveway so you can feel clutch or transmission behavior under load. Bring a flashlight for the undercarriage and an OBD reader for pending codes the dash has not lit yet.
