Used Suzuki SX4 Buying Guide: 2007-2013 AWD, Recalls and Suzuki's U.S. Exit

A used Suzuki SX4 is one of the cheapest ways into a small all-wheel-drive hatchback, and a 2010-2013 AWD car with the six-speed manual is the version I'd hunt for. Go in knowing two things. Suzuki stopped selling cars in the U.S. after its American arm filed for bankruptcy in November 2012, so recall work and parts depend on a thinner service network. And 2012-2013 cars have two separate power steering pump recalls that both need to show as done.

I ran all seven SX4 years, 2007 through 2013, through NHTSA's recall API on Sunday, October 18, 2026, and got nine campaigns. Background on the car comes from Consumer Guide's 2007-13 SX4 review. Suzuki still keeps an owner site for its cars, which surprised me a little, and I'll point you to it below.

Which SX4

The SX4 replaced the Aerio SX hatch for 2007 with a 143-hp 2.0-liter four and either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. Hatchbacks had all-wheel drive with no low range. Suzuki's own FAQ describes three modes: 2WD, AWD Auto, which sends up to half the torque rearward when the fronts slip, and AWD Lock, which sends 30-50 percent rearward and flips back to Auto above 36 mph. A front-drive sedan, the SX4 Sport, joined for 2008, and a front-drive hatch followed for 2009. For 2010 the car got freshened styling, a bit more power, and a six-speed manual or a CVT in place of the old gearboxes.

Consumer Guide calls the automatic pokey and says its test car averaged 20.7 mpg, against 25.2 mpg for a manual hatch. It also lists a 2007-2009 manual that can pop out of gear from worn fifth-gear synchronizers, so on an early car shift into fifth on the highway and let off the throttle. If you don't need AWD, our used Honda Fit guide covers a rival that's easier to service, and our used Subaru Impreza guide covers the more common AWD alternative.

What Suzuki's exit means for you

Suzuki's Nov. 6, 2012 notice says American Suzuki Motor Corp. was winding down car sales in the continental U.S. under Chapter 11 and turning its dealers into a network of authorized service and parts outlets, so it could "fully honor all warranties." The BBC's report that day blamed a strong yen, small cars, and tough U.S. rules. Consumer Guide adds that a limited run of 2013 SX4s was imported to finish the job.

Today the factory warranty has run out on any SX4, but open recalls are still supposed to be fixed free. Suzuki Auto's campaigns page, run by Suzuki Motor USA, still posts SX4 recall notices, including the October 2019 one for 2012-2013 cars, and the site has a service provider locator. Call the nearest provider before you buy and ask two things: will they do recall work on an SX4, and how long does a part take to arrive. I couldn't verify parts prices, so I won't guess, but a long wait for a part is the real cost on an orphan car.

Recalls to clear by VIN

  • 15V587 and 18V804, 2012-2013: the power steering pump can seize, and you lose assist. The second recall, which began October 25, 2019, installs an improved pump, so a car fixed under the first can still be open on the second.
  • 13V405, 2007-2011: the passenger seat sensor mat can fail, and the air bag would then deploy even with a child in that seat.
  • 14V811, 2010-2013 built July 16, 2009 to Nov. 1, 2012: the shifter can leave Park without the brake pedal pressed.
  • 2013 CVT cars: 13V572 for torque converter bolts that can loosen and stall the engine (built Dec. 26, 2012 to Feb. 4, 2013), and 18V331 for a transmission control module that can fail and cut acceleration.
  • Older items: 11V055, a drive belt tensioner spring on 2010 and early 2011 cars; 10V513, mirror screws that can vibrate loose; and 10V392, overheating batteries in some Garmin nuvi units sold with 2008-2010 cars.

Pull the VIN on the NHTSA recall API, then follow our Suzuki recall check by VIN walkthrough to confirm completion.

Other checks on the test drive

Consumer Guide's list includes an air bag warning light that comes on when weight shifts on the seat (2009, fixed with software), an A/C compressor clutch that can fail on 2007 cars, and a clicking CV joint flange on 2007s. Switch through the AWD modes on a loose surface if you can, and listen for binding in tight turns. Confirm the drivetrain and year with our Suzuki VIN decoder guide, because a front-drive hatch looks just like the AWD one, and check NMVTIS for salvage and flood brands. Seller-made "history" printouts are common on cheap orphan cars, and plenty of them don't survive a VIN match.

Our pricing does change, so the checkout total is the one to believe.
