A Volvo VIN often starts with YV1 on cars, YV4 on SUVs from Sweden, LVY or LYV on China-built Geely-era plants, or 7JR on U.S.-built cars from South Carolina. Positions 4-8 carry the model, body and engine, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, and 11 is the plant. A YV4 XC90 from Torslanda and a China-coded S90 can share a model name and still tell very different plant stories. Decode it on vPIC, then run recalls and a history report before you pay.
We ran Volvo patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder in mid October 2026 because used XC60 and XC90 ads still flatten every car into "Swedish-built," and that is not always true once Geely-era China plants and the South Carolina line enter the picture. If the 17 positions are new, start with how to decode a VIN. Shopping crossovers in the same size class? Our used Mazda CX-5 buying guide and the buying used car from dealer checklist cover the non-Volvo homework.
Positions 1-3: YV1, YV4, LVY, LYV and 7JR
vPIC maps YV1 to Volvo Car Corporation passenger cars and YV4 to Volvo multipurpose vehicles, both tied to Sweden in the WMI table. LVY and LYV decode to Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing Co Ltd in China. 7JR maps to Volvo Car USA, LLC for U.S.-built passenger cars. A 2017 S90 pattern starting YV1A22ML decoded to Torslanda, Sweden, Inscription trim, 2.0-liter four. A 2018 XC90 starting YV4A22PK returned Torslanda, Momentum trim, 2.0-liter, AWD T8 series notes. A 2019 XC60 starting YV4BR0DL came back as Inscription with electric/hybrid fuel flags on the T8 path. A 2020 S90 starting LVY502MK decoded to China under Daqing. A 2022 pattern starting 7JR102GK pointed at South Carolina, United States, with a 2.0-liter four. So "Volvo" on the trunk lid does not pin the factory by itself.
Positions 4-8: model, trim and engine
The middle block is Volvo's vehicle descriptor. In our runs, S90 and XC90 patterns returned trim names such as Inscription and Momentum plus 2.0-liter fours. XC60 T8 patterns surfaced series notes for FWD/eAWD and electric primary fuel in vPIC's fields. Honestly, Volvo's SPA-era data is denser on trim labels than some rivals, but a blank model field still happens when the manufacturer submission is thin. When that shows up, verify the door-jamb label and the window sticker instead of arguing with the listing.
Positions 9-11: check digit, year and plant
Position 9 is the check digit in 49 CFR 565.15. Typos usually fail it; cloned VINs can pass. Position 10 is the model year (H was 2017, J was 2018, K was 2019 and L was 2020 in our samples). Position 11 is the plant. Our clean decodes pointed at Torslanda for several YV1 and YV4 cars and SUVs, China for LVY S90 patterns, and South Carolina for 7JR U.S. builds. If a seller markets an S90 as Torslanda-built and the WMI is LVY, believe the VIN.
Recalls that follow Volvo VINs
Always run the full VIN. NHTSA campaign 25V-179 covers certain 2020-2022 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids (plus related S60, S90, V60 and V90 plug-ins) where the high-voltage battery may short-circuit when fully charged and parked, raising fire risk. Owners were advised not to charge until the remedy, and dealers inspect or replace the battery module and update monitoring software. Separate recall 25V-392 covers a Brake Control Module software version (3.5.14) affecting certain 2020-2026 S60, V60, S90, XC60, XC90, XC40 and related electrified models. Look, a plug-in XC60 with an open high-voltage battery campaign is not a car you charge overnight in the garage and "sort later." Get the dealer paperwork with the VIN printed.
We've seen private-party folders that stop at the sales brochure and skip the recall printout. Pull NHTSA the morning you write the check.
After the decode: history, and what it costs
For model context, Car and Driver's XC90 page, Car and Driver's XC60 page, and IIHS XC60 ratings are solid starting points (ratings change by year). None of a VIN decode shows salvage brands, odometer gaps, auction damage or insurance claims. Those come from DMV, insurer, auction and shop records, which CARFAX describes as the basis of its reports. Pull your own; seller PDFs get edited. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
