Does Affinity FCU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Affinity Federal Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public auto loan and rates materials. On Nov. 5, 2026 its rates page showed new auto APRs as low as 5.19% and used auto APRs as low as 5.45%, with older used autos higher, and its auto resource center advertised a free CARFAX offer. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What Affinity's pages say

I read Affinity's rates and auto loan materials on Nov. 5, 2026. They listed:

  • New Auto loans with APR as low as 5.19% (up to 36 months), stepping up by term to 6.87% (up to 96 months).
  • Used Auto loans with APR as low as 5.45% (up to 36 months), stepping up to 6.35% (up to 84 months).
  • Older Model Used Auto loans with APR as low as 7.45% (up to 36 months), stepping up to 7.80% (up to 60 months).
  • An Auto Resource Center pitch for a free CARFAX vehicle history report through Affinity's partner flow, separate from the rate table itself.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask Affinity before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does the free CARFAX offer cover the exact VIN on my purchase contract?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the free offer without getting lazy

If you use Affinity's free CARFAX path, still verify the VIN on the report matches the dash, door jamb and title. Do not skip a recall lookup. Do not treat a clean report as a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection on a lift.

On the day you buy

Match every VIN location to the title and the history report. Confirm the seller ID matches the title name. Keep the Affinity rate quote date with your paperwork, because APRs change.

What to bring anyway

Even when a credit union offers a free history report through a partner page, buy or run your own copy tied to the VIN on the title you will sign. Seller PDFs and affiliate landing pages are easy to mix up with the wrong car. Keep the report with the loan file so a later title surprise has a paper trail.

Rate shopping without skipping the VIN

Affinity's as-low-as APRs are starting points. Credit score, term, loan-to-value and vehicle age all move the final number. A clean rate quote on a dirty title is still a bad deal. Pull the history report before you fall in love with a payment calculator result.

If you refinance a car you already own, still verify the title brand and open recalls. Refi paperwork moves fast, and that is when washed titles slip through.

Free CARFAX versus your own copy

Affinity's auto resource center markets a free CARFAX report through a partner link. Use it if you want, then save a PDF with the VIN visible. If the partner flow fails or shows a different vehicle, stop and buy a report yourself rather than guessing. We've seen buyers paste the wrong VIN into affiliate forms when they were in a hurry at the dealership desk.

Also run NMVTIS for title brands the consumer report might summarize differently. Our what CARFAX does not show guide lists common gaps.

Dealership desk pressure

If a dealer says Affinity "needs" a report they already ran, ask for the VIN on that PDF and compare it to the car. Dealer-pulled reports are fine when the VIN matches. They are not fine when the F&I office reprints an old file from a different stock number.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
