Does Apple FCU Require a CARFAX for a Used Auto Loan?

Apple Federal Credit Union does not publish a CARFAX requirement for used auto loans, based on its auto loan page as read on Nov. 5, 2026. It does limit used vehicles to 10 model years old with no more than 150,000 miles, and it lends up to 130% of value. That high loan-to-value ceiling is exactly why you should check the car's history yourself before you borrow against it.

What Apple FCU publishes

From the Apple FCU auto loan page, with rates shown as of Nov. 4, 2026:

  • Used vehicles up to 10 model years old, maximum 150,000 miles.
  • Loan-to-value up to 130%.
  • Terms up to 84 months, with APRs starting at 4.99%, which includes a 0.25% direct deposit discount.
  • Vehicles 9 to 10 model years old are limited to 60 months and priced higher, by 0.50% to 1.00% depending on tier.
  • Existing Apple FCU loans are not eligible to refinance into a new Apple FCU loan.

Rates change often; treat these as an early November 2026 snapshot.

Why 130% LTV deserves a second look

Borrowing up to 130% of a car's value lets you roll in taxes, fees and add-ons, and sometimes negative equity from a trade. It also means you can owe more than the car is worth on day one. If that car later turns out to have a hidden accident or a branded title, its resale value drops and the gap gets bigger. The CFPB explains the risk in its negative equity explainer. A history report before you sign is a cheap way to avoid financing a car that is worth less than you think.

The 10-year and 150,000-mile limits

Those limits screen out the oldest cars, but they say nothing about accident, flood, title or odometer history. A nine-year-old car with 140,000 miles is right at the edge, carries a higher rate and a 60-month cap, and is exactly the kind of car with several owners and gaps in its records. Decode the VIN with the NHTSA vPIC decoder to confirm the model year, because a single model year can move you into a different rate band or out of eligibility.

Branded titles

The page does not spell out how Apple FCU handles salvage or rebuilt titles. Ask before you commit. Our credit union salvage title loan guide covers how lenders often treat them. Check the title brand in NMVTIS and on a history report, and compare both with the paper title the seller hands you. If they disagree, read our title washing guide.

Refinancing and prepayment

Since existing Apple FCU loans cannot be refinanced into a new Apple FCU loan, choose your term carefully up front. If you are refinancing a dealer loan into Apple FCU, check your current contract for early payoff charges first; our car loan prepayment penalty guide covers what to look for.

Steps before you close

  • Get preapproved and note the maximum amount and term.
  • Confirm the car's model year and mileage fit the limits.
  • Run a history report and check title brands.
  • Get an inspection, especially on cars 7 years and older.
  • Keep the amount financed close to the car's value, even if you are allowed 130%.

Questions to ask the loan officer

Call or message before you shop, and ask five things. Do you need any vehicle history report, or only the title and bill of sale? Will you lend on a salvage, rebuilt or other branded title? How do you value the car, and from which guide? Can I buy from a private seller, and how is the title handled then? How long is my preapproval good for? Then ask the questions specific to Apple FCU: how is the 130% LTV calculated, on retail or trade value, and does it include add-ons? Which rate band applies to a car that turns 9 model years old during the loan process? Is the 0.25% direct deposit discount lost if direct deposit stops later? Is there a minimum loan amount for the longest terms? Getting this clear before you shake hands with a seller saves a second trip to the dealer when the numbers do not match what you expected.

Common mistakes with credit union auto loans

The first is shopping before preapproval, then falling for dealer financing on the spot. The second is trusting a seller's printed history report; run your own from the VIN on the car. The third is rolling everything into the loan because the lender allows it. The fourth is skipping the inspection because the lender approved the car. Lenders approve loans, not mechanical condition.

Pulling a report yourself

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
