A balloon payment on a used car loan is a final payment much larger than the regular ones, and it keeps your monthly payment low only by pushing a large lump sum to the end, so you should know the exact amount and date before you sign and have a plan to pay or refinance it. The CFPB explains balloon payments as a larger-than-usual one-time payment at the end of a loan. On a car loan, the Truth in Lending disclosure must show the payment schedule, including the number, amount and timing of payments, under Regulation Z, section 1026.18, so a balloon should be visible there.
How to spot one
Look at the payment schedule in the Truth in Lending box. If the last payment is much larger than the others, it is a balloon. A low monthly payment on a long term with a large final amount is the giveaway. Do not rely on the salesperson's description; read the contract.
Why it is risky on a used car
A used car loses value while you pay. When the balloon comes due, the car may be worth less than you owe, and refinancing can be hard if the car is old or your credit changed. If you cannot pay, the lender can repossess. Our loan-to-value guide covers how that gap builds.
Alternatives
A shorter standard loan with a bigger down payment usually costs less overall. Compare the total of payments, not just the monthly payment. Ask whether the lender charges a fee to pay early; our prepayment penalty guide covers that.
If you already have one
Mark the due date, start saving or ask about refinancing six months early, and keep insurance current. If the car might be totaled, GAP coverage may matter; our GAP insurance guide covers it.
A simple example
Say a loan has 47 regular payments and a 48th payment several times larger. The monthly figure looks affordable, but the last payment is due all at once, and the Truth in Lending box must show it in the payment schedule. Add up every payment, including the balloon, and compare that total of payments with a standard loan for the same amount and term. The CFPB also notes that some types of credit limit balloon payments, so ask the lender to confirm in writing what happens when it comes due and whether refinancing is guaranteed or only possible. Get that answer before the first payment, not near the end.
Questions to ask before you sign
- How large is the final payment, and on what date is it due?
- Can I refinance the balloon with you, and at what rate?
- Is there a prepayment penalty if I pay it off early?
- What happens to the car if I cannot pay the balloon?
Reading the history report
Read the title section first: any salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon brand changes the value more than anything else. Then line up the odometer readings by date and look for gaps or drops. Check the number of owners and the states where the car was registered. An approved NMVTIS check adds insurer and salvage-yard records. Our odometer discrepancy guide explains odd mileage entries.
Paperwork to keep
Keep the buyer's order, the retail installment contract, the odometer statement, any Buyers Guide, warranty or service-contract papers and every payoff or lien letter in one folder. Photograph the window sticker and the dash mileage on the day you sign. If a dispute comes up later, dated paperwork is what a lender, an insurer, a dealer licensing agency or a court will ask for first.
Compare the financing
Get a preapproval from a bank or credit union before you visit, so you can compare it with the dealer offer on the same term. Compare the APR, the amount financed and the total interest, not just the monthly payment. The CFPB auto loan tools walk through what to read on an offer. Decide on add-ons such as GAP and service contracts on their own merits, and get the price of each one in writing.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
