Bugatti VIN Decoder: VF9 Veyron and Chiron Codes Explained

A Bugatti VIN starts with VF9, and that 9 matters: under 49 CFR 565.15, a maker building fewer than 1,000 vehicles a year uses a six-character manufacturer code made of positions 1-3 plus positions 12-14, which on Bugatti reads 795. Position 11 is M for Molsheim, France. The awkward part we hit on October 14, 2026: NHTSA's vPIC decoded Chiron VINs cleanly, but a real 2008 Veyron 16.4 VIN starting VF9SA25C came back only partly filled, with series BG825 and Molsheim and an error code 5. If you are vetting a Veyron, expect that and lean harder on Bugatti records, the recall list and a full history report.

Every sample went through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder the same day. If the position-by-position logic is new to you, our how to decode a VIN guide covers it. For European exotics with cleaner public decodes, compare the Porsche VIN decoder and the Lamborghini VIN decoder.

Chiron decodes versus Veyron decodes

The Chiron side behaves. A 2018 pattern VF9SP3V3 came back as a Chiron coupe, series BG 744, with an 8-liter 16-cylinder engine and Molsheim as the plant, and a 2019 VIN with the same prefix decoded the same way. A 2020 sample added an LEV III engine note and 8.01 liters. Swap SP for SC and the 2021 sample decoded as a Chiron Pur Sport; a 2022 VF9SW3V3 pattern came back as a Chiron Supersport. A Divo-style SD pattern we tried returned error 8, no detailed data.

The Veyron side does not. The real 2008 Veyron VIN and a 2006 example starting VF9SA15B both returned only the year, series BG825, an engine emissions note on the 2008 car, and Molsheim. Patterns we built for the Grand Sport (SK), Super Sport (SG) and Grand Sport Vitesse (SV) did the same. That is a gap in what was submitted to NHTSA, and it means a Veyron with a "bad" decode is normal. Look, it also means a cloned Veyron VIN would not stand out on a free decoder, so the dash plate, the chassis stampings and Bugatti's own records carry more weight here than on almost any car we cover.

What the hardware is

Car and Driver describes the Veyron as an 8.0-liter quad-turbo W-16 with all-wheel drive making 1001 hp. Its Chiron page lists 1500 hp and 1180 lb-ft from the 8.0-liter 16-cylinder with four turbochargers, with the Super Sport at 1578 hp. Those figures help you sanity-check a listing that claims Chiron output on a Veyron chassis code, or the other way around.

Recalls to clear by VIN

The unit counts are tiny, so each campaign is personal. 16V-166 covers 87 Veyron, Grand Sport and Super Sport cars whose underbody aluminum lift reference plates can corrode and fall off; dealers rivet and seal them. 16V-199 covers 13 early Veyrons with a positive battery cable and alternator connection that can corrode, and 16V-200 covers 72 cars whose fuel gauge can read more fuel than is in the tank. On the Chiron, 17V-764 covers 9 cars with front seat recliner brackets that may not be welded properly, 18V-420 covers 2 cars with a side air bag heat shield installed wrong, 20V-731 covers 3 Chiron and Divo cars whose rear left driveshaft may break, 20V-732 covers 73 cars where stability control does not default back to full mode after Handling Mode, and 24V-096 covers 156 Chirons with a seat belt chime that may not sound. Check the VIN with our NHTSA recall check by VIN steps and then get the Bugatti dealer to confirm in writing.

History traps at hypercar volume

A history report on a car like this can be thin, and thin does not mean clean. Cars at this level often sit in collections, cross borders and get trucked to events, so service visits may be the only paper trail. Ask for every invoice, every import document and every title, and compare mileage across them. Our gray-market import title risks post covers what happens when a European-registered car lands here with mismatched paperwork.

CARFAX describes its reports as drawing on title, odometer, ownership and accident records, which is what you want next to the dealer file. A seller PDF with no VIN on the page is worthless. As of mid October 2026 a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, with a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle near $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail; confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. Against a seven-figure price, that is pocket change, so run both.
