A CARFAX accident row with no severity listed is not a free pass — it is incomplete information. Treat missing severity as a reason to inspect harder, not as proof the hit was tiny.
Late September 2026, sellers still spin blank severity as “must have been nothing.” We’ve opened those files and found structural surprises at the shop. Absence of a label is not evidence of mildness.
Late September 2026, damage rows still get minimized in voice notes as “just a fender.” Official CARFAX and AutoCheck retail singles still get quoted around $39.99–$44.99 depending on the cart (confirm at checkout). Through our licensed reseller checkout, guest reports are about $5.50, member about $4.50, and the CARFAX+AutoCheck bundle about $6.75; credit packs often start near $3. Confirm before you pay. We resell official reports and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
Why severity is sometimes blank
Look: Not every data provider sends a severity estimate. Older events, certain claim paths, and partial records leave gaps. CARFAX can still show that an accident was reported without grading it. Your job is to fill the gap with a mechanic, not with optimism. Related reading: severity glossary and severe damage decisions.
Here’s the catch. Buyers who need a mild/moderate/severe chip to feel oriented get lost here. Orient on the date, mileage, airbag fields, and location if present — then PPI.
- Do not price from “no severity” as if it said mild.
- Ask for police or insurer paperwork when available.
- Mandate a structural and electronic scan at PPI.
Practical response to blank severity
So pull a fresh report, note every accident line without severity, and send the PDF to your inspector with explicit instructions to assume unknown intensity. See also event types glossary.
Blunt risk: letting a seller rush you because “Carfax would have said severe if it mattered.” That is not how incomplete data works.
When to walk anyway
Walk when the seller blocks inspection, blocks a fresh pull, or cannot explain a multi-airbag event even without severity text. Unknown plus obstruction is enough.
Compare with the full severity glossary so you know what you are missing when the chip is blank.
We’ve seen blank-severity cars that inspected clean and others that hid rail work under fresh undercoating. The blank field did not decide — the lift did.
Honestly, if the seller needs a wire before you finish the PDF and the PPI, the urgency is the product. Slow down. Match VIN characters. Save the dated official file. Shine does not rewrite damage rows.
We’ve watched shoppers talk themselves into ignoring severity labels because the photos looked clean under dealer lights. Lights lie. Structural measurements and airbag timelines do not. Bring a mechanic who will put the car on a lift.
How to brief your inspector on blank severity
Email the PDF with highlights on every accident line lacking severity. Write: assume unknown intensity; check rails, airbags, and prior repairs. Vague “look it over” appointments miss the point. We’ve gotten better PPI notes when the shop knew exactly which rows were incomplete.
Ask the seller for any police report number or insurer claim ID tied to the blank-severity event. Sometimes paperwork exists off-report. Sometimes it does not. Silence is a data point. Related paths: using police reports in disputes if you later learn a row is simply wrong.
Bundle AutoCheck when auction announcements might grade the event in different language. Dual reads reduce the chance you are guessing from a single incomplete chip.
If two blank-severity accidents stack on one VIN, raise your walk threshold. Incomplete plus incomplete is a pattern, not a coincidence. Price only after the lift, never before.
Keep a simple rule: blank severity doubles your inspection budget time. If the shop cannot fit a thorough look this week, wait. Blank fields plus rushed appointments are how unknowns become ownership problems.
Also compare AutoCheck language on the same VIN when severity is blank on CARFAX. Different data crumbs appear on different products. Bundle pricing only helps when you open both files the same afternoon.
Write the blank-severity VIN on your calendar reminder to refresh the report if the listing sits more than a week. Feeds update; captions do not.
