Does the Costco Auto Program Include a CARFAX? What Members Get

Costco prearranges prices with participating dealers but does not sell cars or hand out history reports. The current Certified by Volvo special includes CARFAX through Volvo's CPO rules.

Does the Costco Auto Program Include a CARFAX? What Members Get

The Costco Auto Program does not hand you a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a standard member perk. Costco doesn't sell the car at all. It sets up a prearranged price with a participating dealer, and that dealer is the seller. The one place a CARFAX shows up in Costco's materials is a manufacturer certified program: the current Certified by Volvo special says every Certified by Volvo car gets a detailed CARFAX report. That report comes from Volvo's certification rules, not from Costco.

I read through costcoauto.com on the morning of October 16, 2026: the home and pre-owned pages, the program fine print, and the Volvo special page. The wording is pretty clear once you find it. The site says it "is operated by a third party, not by Costco," and the footer disclaimer names Affinity Development Group next to Costco Wholesale. So when people ask "does Costco give you a CARFAX," the honest answer is that it depends on the dealer and the brand's certified program, and you should ask before you show up.

Who actually sells the car

The program's fine print says it directly: "Costco and its affiliates do not sell automobiles or negotiate individual transactions." Every vehicle is "subject to availability and a price prearranged with the participating franchised dealer," and dealers pay a participation fee to be in the program. Certain vehicles may be excluded. The site also says the trained Authorized Dealer Contact at each store is the only person who can make sure you get the prearranged member price. Ask for that person by name, or you may end up with a regular salesperson and regular pricing.

That setup matters for history reports. Whatever paperwork a used car comes with, including a CARFAX, an AutoCheck, a dealer inspection sheet or nothing at all, comes from the dealer's own process. Costco's pre-owned page talks about buying "the Costco way" and lets you shop by body type. Nowhere did I see a promise that every pre-owned car comes with a history report. It's the same question we raise in whether a dealer's free AutoCheck is enough. A report the dealer chose to print is still the dealer's pick.

The Volvo exception, and its dates

Costco's Certified by Volvo special runs September 1 through November 2, 2026. On eligible 2023 to 2025 Certified by Volvo XC90s, Executive members get a $1,500 incentive and Gold Star and Business members get $1,250. Other eligible 2023 to 2025 Certified by Volvo models get $1,250 and $1,000. You had to be a member by August 31, 2026, and you have to take delivery by November 2. The page says each Certified by Volvo car passes a 170-plus point inspection, has under 80,000 miles, and receives a detailed CARFAX Vehicle History Report. Only authorized Volvo dealers can certify the cars.

Carscoops covered the 2025 version of this deal in a September 3, 2025 article and made a fair point: a 170-point checklist sounds thorough, but most certification programs run a similar list. The CARFAX in that case is a Volvo certified pre-owned requirement. If you're looking at a non-certified used car on the same lot, nothing on that page says it gets one too. When the special ends on November 2, this whole section is out of date, so check the page again if you're reading this later in the year.

What Costco's other perks cover

The program also lists 15% off parts and service at participating service centers, up to $500. It excludes tires, oil changes, air bags, state-mandated inspections and Costco Tire Centers. That's useful after you buy, but it does nothing for a car's past. You still have to check accident history, title brands, odometer events and prior use (rental, fleet, lease) yourself.

Listing sites handle this unevenly, and it's worth comparing. Kelley Blue Book listings can show a dealer-paid AutoCheck. We break that down in KBB's CARFAX report policy. TrueCar has its own setup, covered in TrueCar and CARFAX. CarMax's approach is in the CarMax AutoCheck policy. Costco is the odd one out because it's a pricing program, not a marketplace with listing pages.

How I'd use the program on a used car

Get the dealer certificate and the Authorized Dealer Contact's name, then ask by email for the VIN of the exact car before you drive over. Run that VIN through the free NHTSA vPIC decoder to confirm the trim and engine, and do an NMVTIS title search for brands. If the dealer sends over a CARFAX PDF, check that the VIN printed on it matches the car. A recycled screenshot from a different car with the same model name is an easy fake. Then decide if you want your own CARFAX or AutoCheck on top of it.

On pricing: CarVins is a licensed reseller of CARFAX and AutoCheck reports and is not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Costco. As of this October a guest CARFAX costs around $5.50 here, members pay about $4.50, and the AutoCheck bundle is near $6.75. Retail is usually somewhere from $39.99 to $44.99, depending on which source you check. Confirm at checkout, because our prices change too. Against a used-car purchase, it's a small cost compared with buying a car whose history you never checked.
