A U.S.-market Ferrari VIN starts with ZFF, the WMI for Ferrari S.p.A. in Maranello, Italy. In our October 14, 2026 vPIC runs, 458 Italia patterns starting ZFF67NFA decoded to Maranello with the F136FB 4.5-liter V8, California patterns starting ZFF65LJA and ZFF65TJA came back as Maranello convertibles with F136IB or F136IH engines, a 488 GTB pattern ZFF79ALA listed a Maranello 3.9-liter V8 coupe, and a 488 Spider pattern ZFF80AMA decoded to the F154CB 3.9-liter convertible. Position 10 is the year and position 11 is the plant (0 in our samples). These are low-volume Italian sports cars, so gray-market stories, Takata air bag work and incomplete brake campaigns matter as much as the badge.
We built those samples from real complaint prefixes and ran them through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder. If you need the basics first, read how to decode a VIN. For another European luxury decode neighbor, see our Mercedes VIN decoder.
458 Italia and California patterns
458 Italia is the mid-engine coupe from the early 2010s. Our 2010-2015 patterns ZFF67NFA all decoded to Maranello, Emilia-Romagna, with the F136FB 4.5-liter eight, and later samples listed about 562 hp. California is the front-engine convertible. A 2011-2012 pattern ZFF65LJA came back as a Maranello convertible with the F136IB 4.3-liter V8 and a dual-clutch box, while 2013-2014 patterns ZFF65TJA listed the F136IH 4.3-liter around 483 hp. A 2017 California T pattern ZFF77XJA decoded to Maranello with the newer F154BB 3.9-liter turbo V8.
488 GTB and Spider
488 is the turbo era. Our 2016 GTB pattern ZFF79ALA decoded to a Maranello coupe with a 3.9-liter V8 automatic under series GTB, and a 2018 Spider pattern ZFF80AMA came back as a convertible with the F154CB 3.9-liter eight. So if a listing says "488" and the VDS block does not look like 79A or 80A in our sample set, ask for the door sticker and decode it yourself before you talk price.
Year and plant codes
Position 9 is the check digit under 49 CFR 565.15. Year codes in our samples included A for 2010, B for 2011, C for 2012, D for 2013, E for 2014, F for 2015, G for 2016, H for 2017 and J for 2018. Plant code 0 pointed to Maranello. Look, a cloned VIN can still pass the check digit, so matching the dash plate to the door sticker by hand is not optional on a Ferrari.
Recalls to clear by VIN
Takata passenger air bag campaigns stack up on Californias and early 458s. 16V-341 and 18V-188 cover non-desiccated passenger inflators on 2009-2011 California and 2010-2011 458 Italia cars. Brake fluid reservoir cap venting shows up later under 22V-536 across a long list that includes California, California T, 488 Pista and Roma-era cars. 21V-833 covers hydraulic brake issues on 458 and 488 families. On early 488 GTB cars, 15V-881 covers fuel hose fittings, and 19V-090 covers later fuel system work. Run the VIN with our NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough before you celebrate a "clean" seller PDF.
Title, gray-market talk and price
A decode will not prove U.S.-spec compliance by itself. We've seen sellers blur "European delivery" stories into U.S. titles without showing the paperwork. Ask for the door sticker, the EPA/DOT labels if the car was imported, and a real history report. CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.
What a decode will not show
vPIC will not tell you if the car flooded, if the miles jumped, or if a prior owner tracked it hard at the track. Honestly, on a Ferrari the service binder and recall printouts matter as much as the Maranello plant code. Clear open campaigns first, then pull a real report before you wire a deposit.
