Georgia's Own lends up to 125% on cars and does not ask for a CARFAX. That makes your own history check matter more.

Georgia's Own Credit Union Auto Loan CARFAX Policy: What the Lender Checks

Georgia's Own Credit Union does not require a CARFAX or AutoCheck report for a used car loan, based on its public auto loan page. It sets the rate by the car's year, the term and loan-to-value. Because it can finance up to 125% of the value, a bad car can leave you owing far more than it is worth, so run the history yourself first.

What Georgia's Own says about used car loans

I read Georgia's Own's public auto loan page on Nov. 5, 2026. Here is what it lists:

  • Terms up to 96 months and financing up to 125%.
  • First payment deferral of up to 45 days.
  • APR based on collateral and loan-to-value. The page gave an example of a 2025 vehicle under 90% LTV for 48 months at 5.07% APR, about $23.06 per $1,000 borrowed, with terms effective Sept. 1, 2026.
  • GAP Plus, which is a debt cancellation product rather than insurance, plus Member Protection Plus and mechanical repair coverage.
  • A first-time auto loan program up to $20,000 with 8% down.

Rates and terms change, so check the Georgia's Own auto loan page for the current numbers before you shop.

Does Georgia's Own require a CARFAX?

No. The public auto loan page does not mention CARFAX, AutoCheck or any vehicle history report as a condition of the loan. That matches what most credit unions do. The lender cares about the value of the car, the title and the lien, because those protect the loan. Whether the car was in a flood or had its odometer rolled back is a question the lender mostly leaves to you.

Georgia's Own ties the rate to collateral and LTV, so the car's value is what it underwrites. A book value does not know about a frame repair or a salvage auction two owners back. That is why the history report is your diligence, not the lender's.

How the title and value checks work

When you finance a used car, the lender is listed as lienholder on the title. If the car turns out to carry a salvage, rebuilt or flood brand, many lenders will cut the amount they lend or decline it. Our guides to a credit union salvage title loan and a loan on a rebuilt title car explain the usual limits. You can check title brands at low cost through NMVTIS providers, but a full history report adds accidents, service and ownership detail.

Loan-to-value also matters. If you agree to pay more than the car is worth, the loan can sit above the car's value for years. Our loan-to-value guide and GAP insurance guide walk through why that matters if the car is totaled.

A simple order of steps

  • Get pre-approved so you know your rate and how much you can borrow.
  • Shortlist cars and run each VIN through a history report before you drive anywhere.
  • Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup as well. Our recall check guide shows how.
  • Pay for a pre-purchase inspection on the car you pick.
  • Send the lender the purchase agreement, VIN and mileage, then close.

Doing the report before the inspection saves you money. There is no point paying a shop to inspect a car with a flood brand.

What to watch for in the report

Look for a title brand, a total loss from an insurer, odometer readings that go backward, and a car that bounced through several auctions quickly. Each one can affect what Georgia's Own will lend and what you can resell the car for later. If a dealer hands you a report, compare the VIN to the car and check the date. Our guide to spotting a fake report lists the common edits. The CFPB auto loan pages are also worth a read before you sign.

Questions to ask Georgia's Own before you close

  • Is there a maximum vehicle age or mileage for the rate I was quoted?
  • Which value guide will you use for this car, and what happens if the price is above it?
  • Will you lend on a car with a rebuilt or salvage brand, and on what terms?
  • Do I need to buy GAP or other add-ons, or are they optional?

Get the answers in writing or in the loan documents. Add-ons are usually optional, and it is fine to say no.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
