Does La Capitol FCU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

La Capitol lists new-vehicle APRs from 5.49% and used from 6.49%. A history report is not listed as required, so run one yourself.

Does La Capitol FCU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

La Capitol Federal Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public vehicle-loan rate table. On Nov. 5, 2026 its rates materials showed New Vehicle (2023 and newer) APRs as low as 5.49% on short terms (effective Oct. 13, 2026) and Used Vehicle APRs as low as 6.49% for 2019-2022 model years, with 2018 and older starting higher. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What La Capitol's pages say

I read La Capitol's vehicle loan rate table on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed:

  • New Vehicle - 2023 and newer: APR as low as 5.49% (1-48 months), 5.79% (49-66 months), 5.89% (67-75 months), 6.04% (76-78 months) and 6.19% (79-84 months), with footnotes on minimum amounts for longer terms.
  • Used Vehicle - 2022 and older: 2019-2022 model years as low as 6.49% to 6.89% by term; 2018 and older as low as 8.49% to 8.79% on listed terms.
  • Payment examples: $25,000 for 67 months at 5.79% APR about $437.65 monthly (new), and $25,000 for 67 months at 7.79% APR about $461.33 monthly (used example on the page).
  • Minimum auto loan amount of $7,500 on the examples shown.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask La Capitol before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does my model year land in the 2019-2022 used row or the 2018-and-older row?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the figures without getting trapped

La Capitol splits new and used on purpose. A 2018 car is not priced like a 2022 car on that table. Ask for the row that matches your VIN year in writing before you shop.

Honestly, we have seen buyers celebrate a new-vehicle "as low as" rate while shopping a 2017 car that belongs on the older used row. Match the year first.

Title brands and La Capitol

Public rates did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands before you write a deposit. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.

If the seller hands you a thin PDF that skips auction rows, buy your own report anyway. The CU's rate sheet assumes the collateral story is true.

Membership and timing notes

La Capitol membership rules and eligibility sit on the credit union's site and can change. Confirm you qualify before you treat a rate quote as locked. Longer terms on the new-vehicle table carry minimum amount footnotes, so a short-dollar loan may not qualify for the longest term you saw online.

When the purchase is out of state, ask how La Capitol handles title brands from that state and whether they need a local inspection. Pair that answer with a dated history report so you are not arguing from memory at closing.

If the dealer offers to "handle financing in the box," compare that APR to the La Capitol quote in writing. CFPB materials say rate, term and add-ons are negotiable; taxes and government title fees are not. Keep both quotes with the VIN report.

Day-of closing checklist

Match the VIN on the contract, the title and your history report before you sign. If any digit differs, stop. Photograph the odometer with the signed contract so mileage arguments later have a date stamp.

Ask the loan officer to show the final APR, term, amount financed and any add-ons on one page. Cross out products you declined. Then confirm your history-report total at checkout and keep that receipt with the CU packet.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
