Does LAFCU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

LAFCU lists automobile and truck APRs from 3.90% on short terms. A history report is not listed as required, so run one yourself.

Does LAFCU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Los Angeles Federal Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public rates page. On Nov. 5, 2026 its Loans and Savings Rates page (dated as of 11-5-26 on the site) showed Automobiles and Trucks APRs from 3.90% to 16.00% for 1-60 months, 5.50% to 16.50% for 61-72 months, and 5.75% to 16.75% for 73-84 months. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What LAFCU's pages say

I read LAFCU's rates page on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed:

  • Automobiles and Trucks: 3.90% to 16.00% (1-60 months), 5.50% to 16.50% (61-72 months), and 5.75% to 16.75% (73-84 months, with 84 months if $20,000+), with sample payment figures and notes about 125% financing for new purchases.
  • Classic, Collectible, Exotic and Special-Interest Vehicles from 4.90% with 70% financing of a low valuation guide or appraised value.
  • Motorcycles from 4.90%, recreational vehicles from 5.40%, and boats from 5.90% on the same rates table.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask LAFCU before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does my car land in the standard auto table or the classic/collectible row?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the figures without getting trapped

LAFCU's auto table is a range, not a promise that every member gets 3.90%. Ask for the APR that matches your credit tier and term in writing before you shop. Bring your own history report so the file matches the VIN on the purchase contract.

Honestly, we have seen buyers treat a classic-row 4.90% pitch as automatic, then learn the car did not meet the valuation or appraisal rules on that line. Clarify the row first.

Title brands and LAFCU

Public rates did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands before you write a deposit. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.

If the seller pushes a washed out-of-state title story, slow down. Pair NMVTIS with your history report before the CU locks an advance.

Membership and timing notes

LAFCU membership rules and eligibility sit on the credit union's site and can change. Confirm you qualify before you treat a rate quote as locked. Classic and collectible rows use different LTV rules than the standard auto table, so ask which row applies before you shop.

When the purchase is out of state, ask how LAFCU handles title brands from that state and whether they need a local inspection. Pair that answer with a dated history report so you are not arguing from memory at closing.

If the dealer offers to "handle financing in the box," compare that APR to the LAFCU quote in writing. CFPB materials say rate, term and add-ons are negotiable; taxes and government title fees are not. Keep both quotes with the VIN report.

Day-of closing checklist

Match the VIN on the contract, the title and your history report before you sign. If any digit differs, stop. Photograph the odometer with the signed contract so mileage arguments later have a date stamp.

Ask the loan officer to show the final APR, term, amount financed and any add-ons on one page. Cross out products you declined. Then confirm your history-report total at checkout and keep that receipt with the CU packet.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
