Does Unitus Community CU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Unitus lists new-auto APRs from 5.04% and adds 0.25% for 2017-2024 used autos. A report is not listed as required, so run one yourself.

Does Unitus Community CU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Unitus Community Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public auto-loan rate sheet. On Nov. 5, 2026 its Auto Loan Rates PDF (effective Oct. 21, 2026) showed new-auto APRs starting at 5.04% for short terms, with used autos (2017-2024) adding 0.25% to the new schedule and older autos (2016 or older) adding 1.25%. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What Unitus's pages say

I read Unitus's auto loan rate PDF on Nov. 5, 2026. It listed:

  • New Autos (2025 or newer) APRs by term and credit tier, with the lowest published cell at 5.04% for 00-36 months and higher cells through 76-84 months up to 16.09% on the printed grid.
  • Used Autos (2017 to 2024): add 0.25% to the new rates; maximum term 84 months.
  • Older Autos (2016 or older): add 1.25% to the new rates; maximum term 75 months.
  • Rates assume automatic (ACH) payment and e-statements, with 0.25% added for each item not selected, and a payment example of $216.93 monthly on a $15,000 loan for 84 months at 5.69%.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask Unitus before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does my year land in the used (+0.25%) or older (+1.25%) add-on, and can I see that in writing?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the figures without getting trapped

Unitus separates new, used and older autos on purpose. A 2016 car is not priced like a 2024 car on that sheet. Ask for the tier that matches your VIN year before you fall in love with a listing photo.

Look, a seller PDF that skips auction rows will not save a loan that underwrites on a clean title. Pull your own report first.

Title brands and Unitus

The public rate PDF did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands before you write a deposit. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.

Acceptable collateral on the sheet named autos, passenger vans up to eight seats, and light trucks F350/3500-class or smaller. If your purchase sits outside that list, ask before you schedule the closing.

Membership and timing notes

Unitus membership rules and eligibility sit on the credit union's site and can change. Confirm you qualify before you treat a rate quote as locked. The Oct. 21, 2026 sheet also ties discounts to ACH and e-statements within 90 days of origination, so missing that window can raise the APR after you already signed.

When the purchase is out of state, ask how Unitus handles title brands from that state and whether they need a local inspection. Pair that answer with a dated history report so you are not arguing from memory at closing.

If the dealer offers to "handle financing in the box," compare that APR to the Unitus quote in writing. CFPB materials say rate, term and add-ons are negotiable; taxes and government title fees are not. Keep both quotes with the VIN report.

Day-of closing checklist

Match the VIN on the contract, the title and your history report before you sign. If any digit differs, stop. Photograph the odometer with the signed contract so mileage arguments later have a date stamp.

Ask the loan officer to show the final APR, term, amount financed and any add-ons on one page. Cross out products you declined. Then confirm your history-report total at checkout and keep that receipt with the CU packet.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
