Does Oregon Community CU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

OCCU lists vehicle loan APRs from 6.09% to 29.98%. A history report is not listed as required, so run one yourself before you sign.

Does Oregon Community CU Require a CARFAX for a Car Loan?

Oregon Community Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a hard requirement on its public vehicle-loan materials. On Nov. 5, 2026 its consumer loan rate schedule (effective Oct. 22, 2026) showed vehicle loan APRs from 6.09% to 29.98%, with RV, motorcycle and boat ranges listed separately. Because those quotes assume the car matches the paperwork, a history check before you sign protects you more than it protects the credit union.

What OCCU's pages say

I read OCCU's vehicle loan page and the consumer loan rates PDF on Nov. 5, 2026. They listed:

  • Vehicle Loan purchase or refinance APRs from 6.09% to 29.98%, with the lowest APR on vehicles under 75% loan-to-value.
  • RV Loans from 6.64% to 20.97%, motorcycles/ATVs/snowmobiles/personal watercraft from 10.50% to 15.46%, and boat loans from 11.50% to 16.46%.
  • Notes that approved APR rises 0.25% without autopay from an OCCU checking account or ACH, and another 0.25% without eStatements.
  • Language that year of collateral, LTV, term, credit tier, market area and loan amount may affect final APR. Rates were described as current as of Oct. 22, 2026.

I did not find language that said a CARFAX is mandatory to close every auto loan. Offers and underwriting rules can still change, so ask your loan officer what file they need for your VIN.

Why you should still pull a report

Credit unions price loans on the assumption that mileage, title brand and accident history match the application. A rebuilt brand, odometer rollback or undeclared salvage event can change insurance, resale and whether the CU will advance the amount you expected. Run NHTSA recalls on the VIN, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches. For branded-title financing friction, see financing a rebuilt title car.

Questions to ask OCCU before you sign

  • Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
  • Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or max advance?
  • Does the quoted APR assume autopay and eStatements, and what happens if I drop them?
  • Which add-ons are optional under CFPB rules for this loan?

How to use the figures without getting trapped

OCCU's public range is wide. A 6.09% quote and a 29.98% quote are not the same product in practice. Ask for the APR that matches your credit tier, LTV and term in writing before you shop cars. Bring your own history report to the appointment so the file matches the VIN on the purchase contract.

Honestly, we have seen buyers celebrate a "as low as" rate, then discover the advance shrinks after a branded title shows up late. Pull the report first.

Title brands and Oregon Community CU

Public pages did not spell out a salvage advance matrix. That silence is normal. It does not mean a rebuilt brand will clear at the same LTV as a clean title. Ask the underwriter how they treat salvage, rebuilt, flood and lemon brands for your state before you write a deposit check.

If the seller hands you a PDF that skips auction rows, buy your own report anyway. Confirm report contents and total at checkout, then keep the PDF with the loan packet.

Membership and timing notes

OCCU membership rules and eligibility sit on the credit union's site and can change. Confirm you qualify before you treat a rate quote as locked. A preapproval that expires mid-shopping is a common way buyers lose the APR they expected.

When the purchase is out of state, ask how OCCU handles title brands from that state and whether they need a local inspection. Pair that answer with a dated history report so you are not arguing from memory at closing.

If the dealer offers to "handle financing in the box," compare that APR to the OCCU quote in writing. CFPB materials say rate, term and add-ons are negotiable; taxes and government title fees are not. Keep both quotes with the VIN report.

Day-of closing checklist

Match the VIN on the contract, the title and your history report before you sign. If any digit differs, stop. Photograph the odometer with the signed contract so mileage arguments later have a date stamp.

Ask the loan officer to show the final APR, term, amount financed and any add-ons on one page. Cross out products you declined. Then confirm your history-report total at checkout and keep that receipt with the CU packet.

What the report costs

As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
