MINI Recall Check by VIN: Cooper, Countryman, Cooper SE

To check MINI recalls by VIN, paste the 17-digit VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup and then ask a MINI or BMW dealer for the open campaign printout. Incomplete lines are free repairs the car still owes. In mid October 2026, Cooper SE electric shoppers should clear high-voltage battery campaigns first, while newer Cooper and Countryman buyers keep seeing shared BMW Group filings for brakes and seat belts.

MINI recalls are filed by BMW of North America, so the same PDF often lists BMW X models next to a Countryman or Cooper. That trips people up. The NHTSA number looks like 24V-612, and the dealer screen shows BMW's own campaign code. Both point to the same repair. When we pulled MINI filings from NHTSA on October 13, 2026, the Cooper SE battery campaigns and a large integrated brake recall that includes 2025 MINI models were the ones worth calling out by name. Still run the VIN. A model-year list will miss cars that were never built with the bad part.

How to run a MINI VIN and read the result

Match the VIN on the windshield to the door jamb sticker and the title. Our walkthrough on checking recalls by VIN on NHTSA covers incomplete, completed, and remedy not yet available. Decode the car with our MINI VIN decoder first, because a Cooper hardtop, Countryman, Clubman, and Cooper SE are different vehicles with different campaigns. Because MINI campaigns often share BMW Group hardware, our BMW recall check by VIN guide is a fair cross-reference when a dealer printout lists both brands. Call the service desk yourself. A seller phone screenshot is not a dealer printout.

Cooper SE: high-voltage battery campaigns

NHTSA recall 24V-612 covers about 12,535 2020-2024 MINI Hardtop 2 Door Cooper SE vehicles. Faults in the high-voltage battery or system can cause a short circuit. Owners are told that if a warning message appears, park outside and away from structures until the repair is done. Dealers provide a software update. Separately, 24V-302 covers about 145 of those same model years whose battery housing may not have been sealed properly, allowing water in. Dealers inspect, leak-test, and repair the battery as needed. We've seen used-EV ads that never mention either line. Ask for the printout before you talk price.

Cooper, Countryman, Clubman: brakes, belts, older fuel plate

24V-104 covers about 266,716 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles, including certain 2025 MINI Hardtop and Countryman models, whose integrated brake system may lose power assist or impair ABS and stability control. Dealers replace the integrated brake system. On 2025-2026 Cooper and Countryman models, 25V-616 covers about 1,571 vehicles whose front seat belt retractor torsion bars may have been damaged in production; dealers replace both front retractors.

Older Countryman gas models still show up in 18V-557, about 9,953 2017-2019 Cooper Countryman vehicles that may be missing a crash protection plate near the high-pressure fuel pump. Dealers install the plate. Clubman and hardtop shoppers should not skip the VIN just because the car looks clean on a lot.

Clubman production for the U.S. market wound down after recent model years, but used Clubman cars still show up with the same BMW-filed campaigns that hit Cooper hardtops of the same years. If a listing calls the car a John Cooper Works trim, decode the VIN anyway. JCW badges get swapped and ads get rewritten. Ask the dealer whether any dealer software updates are still pending on that specific car, then save the printout with the sale paperwork.

What a recall check misses, and what a report costs

A clean recall lookup ignores flood titles, rebuilt wrecks, and rolled odometers. CARFAX says its reports include title brands, odometer readings, ownership, and reported accidents, and our guide on how to read a CARFAX report explains those lines. Consumer Reports' MINI pages help with ownership patterns after the VIN is clean. As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, versus roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail.
