Mission Fed doesn't say anywhere that it requires a CARFAX or AutoCheck report for an auto loan, and it doesn't give you one. It does have a rule that matters more: "No branded titles or commercial use vehicles will be financed." So a salvage, rebuilt or other branded car is out. As of Oct. 20, 2026, used cars from 2017 to 2021 start at 6.99% APR, 2022 and newer start at 4.99%, and the rate tables don't list anything older than 2017.
I read Mission Federal Credit Union's auto loan page, rates page and membership page on Oct. 20, 2026. I didn't apply or call. The rate tables don't show an effective date, so treat these as what the site showed that afternoon. San Diego has two big credit unions, and if you're comparing, our SDCCU auto loan post covers the other one.
Who can join
Mission Fed's membership page says anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in San Diego County can join. Volunteers or members of partner organizations, immediate family or household members of a member, and Mission Fed employees are also eligible. That's narrower than credit unions that let anyone in through a small association fee. If you don't have a San Diego connection, you probably can't use it.
Rates as of Oct. 20, 2026
These are the "as low as" APRs from the auto loans page and the rates page, which matched:
- 2022 and newer: 4.99% up to 66 months, 5.24% from 67 to 78 months, 6.24% from 79 to 84 months.
- 2017-2021: 6.99% up to 66 months, 7.24% from 67 to 75 months. No terms longer than 75 months are listed.
That's a two-point jump for a car that's a year older than the 2022 cutoff, so a 2021 and a 2022 of the same model can have very different payments. Mission Fed says these are its best rates and yours "may be higher," and that loan amounts and terms depend on the car's age, mileage and condition. I didn't find a mileage limit posted.
The fine print that matters
The branded-title rule is in the disclosures at the bottom of the auto loan page, together with the requirement for a valid driver license and current insurance. If you're looking at a rebuilt car, read our California salvage and rebuilt title rules and plan on paying cash or finding another lender.
For used cars, Mission Fed finances up to 120% of the Retail Kelley Blue Book value. New cars use MSRP. The extra room can cover tax and fees, but it also makes it easy to owe more than the car is worth. Rates are available on purchases, lease buyouts and refinances, and Mission Fed says a fee may apply if you refinance a loan that's already with Mission Fed. You can push the first payment back up to 90 days, but interest accrues the whole time.
Private-party purchases are allowed. The auto loan page lists "a private seller" as one way to find a car. The Auto Loan Express Check discount can't be used for private-party purchases, refinances, lease buyouts or cars from non-franchise or independent dealers, and the car has to be five model years old or newer. Mission Fed also has a Rate Break program that can cut your rate by 1% after every six on-time payments, up to 3% over the first 18 payments, for borrowers in lower credit tiers.
What the numbers look like
My example: $25,000 over 66 months at 4.99% is about $434 a month and $3,640 in interest. At 6.99% for a 2017-2021 car, it's about $457 a month and $5,190 in interest. At 11.19%, the average used-car APR in Experian's Q2 2026 data (still the newest when I checked), it's about $509 and $8,590. These are my calculations, not Mission Fed's, and your rate will depend on your credit.
Since Mission Fed won't check history, you should
The branded-title rule only covers what's on the title. A car can have serious accident damage, a flood past or an odometer problem and still have a clean title, especially if it came from another state. Look up the VIN on NMVTIS for brands, get a history report, and have a mechanic look at it before you sign. If a dealer hands you a printed report, check the date. An old printout is how a lot of people end up surprised.
Budget for tax and fees before you settle on a loan amount, because they can add a lot to what you need to borrow. Our California used car sales tax guide explains it, and our California private-sale title transfer guide covers the paperwork if you buy from a person.
CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and isn't affiliated with either company or with Mission Fed. As of late October 2026, reports cost around $5.50 for guests and $4.50 for members, the CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle about $6.75, and retail prices run $39.99 to $44.99. The checkout total is the real number.
