Old National Bank Auto Loan and CARFAX: Rates, Terms and Who Checks History

Old National Bank does make direct car loans for used vehicles, but it doesn't include a CARFAX or AutoCheck report and its auto loan page says nothing about requiring one. You apply by phone, at a branch, or through a banker, and the rate depends partly on the vehicle's age. So the history check is on you, and on a used car with an accident in its past, that check can change how much the loan should be.

I read Old National's auto loan page, its company page and its car-loan calculator pages on Saturday evening, October 17, 2026. Everything below comes from those pages. The rates on the auto loan page carry a footnote saying they're effective as of January 27, 2026, which is old for a rate sheet, so treat them as a floor to ask about, not a quote.

Who Old National is

Old National's company page says it's headquartered in Evansville, Indiana, dates to 1834, and has about $74 billion in assets, calling itself the sixth largest commercial bank headquartered in the Midwest. The site header also shows First Midwest Bank as a division of Old National, so if your branch sign says First Midwest, this is the same lender. That's a big footprint compared with the smaller regionals we've covered, like the Wisconsin bank in our Associated Bank auto loan post, which only lends through dealers.

What the auto loan page actually offers

The Old National auto loan page says it lends on new or pre-owned cars and trucks, with terms up to 84 months and rates "as low as 6.005% APR." Read the footnote before you get excited. That example is a $20,000 loan on a 2025 or newer model year vehicle over 60 months at 5.64% interest, at the top credit tier, including an optional 0.25% discount for autopay from an Old National checking account and a $175 processing fee rolled into the loan. A used car that's several years old isn't that example, and the page doesn't post a used-car rate table.

The page also says preapproval works by filling out an application "based on the age of the vehicle you are considering" and the most you want to borrow. To apply, you call 877-427-7220, go to a banking center, or fill out a contact form, which the bank says won't affect your FICO score. I didn't find an online application for a car loan, and I didn't find any posted limit on a car's age or mileage.

The refinance line I'd read twice

In the refinance section, Old National lists "Refinancing for more than your auto is worth" as a feature. That can help someone stuck in a bad dealer loan. It can also bury you. If a car has a reported accident or a branded title, its trade-in value can drop well below a clean car's, and borrowing over its value stretches the time you're upside down. Our negative equity trade-in post shows the math, and the GAP insurance on a used car guide covers the backstop if the car gets totaled.

Why a history report matters more here

Since you're borrowing directly, nobody at the bank looks at the car's past before you sign with the seller. A dealer might hand you a free AutoCheck; our post on whether a dealership's free AutoCheck is enough explains what those leave out. A private seller might hand you nothing, or a screenshot. We've seen plenty of clean-looking PDFs that turned out to be for a different VIN, so match all 17 characters to the car's dash plate and door label.

Then decode the VIN with NHTSA's vPIC to confirm the model year, because the rate depends on age, and search NMVTIS for salvage, junk or flood brands. If the car is titled in Indiana, our Indiana salvage and rebuilt title rules post covers what a brand means there.

How it stacks up

Old National's setup is the opposite of a dealer-only program. You get a preapproval amount from the bank first, then go shopping, which puts you in a stronger spot at the desk. The page doesn't say whether a private-party sale is fine, so ask before you plan one. Other lenders are more specific about the car itself: Associated caps its dealer program at 10 model years and 125,000 miles, and our Zions auto loan post notes Zions lends up to 110% of NADA retail. Old National posts neither kind of limit, so ask a banker three things on the phone: what rate this car's model year gets, whether the $175 fee applies, and whether there is an age or mileage cutoff.

CarVins is a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and has no affiliation with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Old National. In mid October 2026 one report costs about $5.50 as a guest, roughly $4.50 with a membership, or near $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck pair, while retail usually runs $39.99 to $44.99.
