Pagani VIN Decoder: ZA9 and F76 Codes for Huayra, Utopia and Zonda

Pagani VIN Decoder: ZA9 and F76 Codes for Huayra, Utopia and Zonda

A U.S.-market Pagani VIN starts with ZA9 and carries F76 in positions 12-14, and NHTSA's vPIC decoder handles the newer cars well: when we ran real VINs on October 14, 2026, 2016-2017 Huayra coupes and roadsters and 2024 Utopias came back clean with the plant listed as San Cesario sul Panaro, Italy. The 2014 Huayras we tried returned only the make and year, and a Zonda chassis number failed the check digit outright. So the decoder can tell you which Pagani you are looking at on most U.S. cars, and on a Zonda it mostly tells you that you have left the federal VIN system.

All the VINs on this page came from public auction and dealer listings, including an RM Sotheby's 2014 Huayra lot, and we ran each one through the free vPIC decoder without changing a character. If the 17-character layout is new to you, start with how to decode a VIN. The Koenigsegg VIN decoder we put up earlier today uses the same small-maker layout, so the two make a decent side-by-side.

Why ZA9 alone tells you almost nothing

The 9 in position 3 is the giveaway that Pagani is a small manufacturer. Under 49 CFR 565.15, a 9 there means the maker is identified by positions 1-3 plus positions 12-14 together. vPIC lists Pagani's code as ZA9F76, registered in March 2016. Typing just ZA9 into the decoder gets you error 7, "manufacturer is not registered," because those three characters on their own do not point to one company. Look for F76 near the end before you believe anything else.

The rest reads cleanly on the cars we tried. Position 4 was H for every Huayra and U for both Utopias, and position 5 was 1 on coupes and 2 on roadsters (ZA9H11 versus ZA9H12). Position 10 is the year: E for 2014, G for 2016, H for 2017, R for 2024. Every clean decode listed the engine as the Mercedes-AMG M158, and the Utopias added 6.0 liters and 12 cylinders.

Where the decoder goes quiet

The 2014 Huayra coupes are the frustrating ones. Three different real 2014 VINs, including the cars from RM Sotheby's and Gooding Christie's lots, all came back with error 8, "no detailed data available currently," so you get PAGANI and 2014 and nothing about body or engine. That is a gap in what Pagani submitted for that year, and it does not mean the VIN is fake. vPIC's model list for Pagani shows only the Huayra and the Utopia.

Zondas are a different situation. The chassis number on a 2014 Zonda LM Roadster that sold in Dubai for $11,086,250 (Andorra registration) failed the check digit, and vPIC read its year as 2001. Another Zonda number threw four errors at once. CarBuzz notes the original Zonda C12 was never fully road legal in the U.S. and could only be driven here under Show or Display rules, capped at 2,500 miles a year, until 1999-2000 cars aged past 25 years. MotorTrend calls the Zondas some owners keep here "gray-market show-and-display" cars. If a Zonda is offered with a clean, unrestricted state title, ask for the import file. Our gray market import title risks post covers what to request.

Three recalls, and how few cars they cover

Pagani's recall file is short, and each campaign touched a tiny population. 16V-588 covers 32 Huayras from 2014-2016, built April 21, 2014 to July 29, 2016, where the driver frontal air bag may not stay secured to the steering wheel during deployment; dealers change the fasteners. 18V-175 covers all 16 of the 2017 Huayra Coupe BC and Roadster cars, whose battery management software could leave too little power to start or keep idling, with a new battery as the fix. 24V-891 covers 8 Utopias from 2024 with a passenger dashboard panel that may keep the air bag from deploying as intended; the repair adds kevlar strips, and owner letters went out December 12, 2024.

With populations that small, nobody on the selling side is going to remember which cars got the fix. Run the exact VIN through our NHTSA recall check by VIN steps and ask for the dealer invoice showing the work.

History and money on a car built one a week

Car and Driver reported that only 99 Utopia coupes would be built, about one a week at San Cesario sul Panaro, with an 852-hp twin-turbo AMG V12 and U.S. sales planned without Show or Display workarounds. At that volume a history report will be thin, and honestly, that is normal. What you want is continuity: a title chain with no gaps, mileage that climbs in order, and no salvage or flood brand from a state you did not expect. A seller "summary sheet" with no VIN printed on it is not a history report, no matter what car it describes.

As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us runs about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and a CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, against roughly $39.99 to $44.99 at retail. Confirm at checkout because prices move. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian. On a car like this the report is the cheap part; the factory and dealer records are what you are really buying.
