Used Lexus GX Buying Guide: GX 460 vs GX 550 and Recalls

For most shoppers in mid October 2026, the used Lexus GX to buy is a 2014-2023 GX 460 with its Takata air bag work done, a clean title and an underside that does not look like it lost a fight with a trail. The 2024-on GX 550 is quicker and far more modern, but early cars carry an open engine-debris recall that can end in a replacement engine, so confirm that one by VIN before anything else. Off-road use is the other thing to check, because the history report and the skid plates often tell different stories.

We ran sample patterns through NHTSA's free vPIC decoder on October 14, 2026. The GX 460 decodes cleanly. A 2010 pattern starting JTJBM7FX came back as a GX 460 Base, series URJ150L, with the 1UR-FE 4.6-liter V-8 and four-wheel drive, built at Toyota's Tahara plant in Aichi, Japan. A 2017 JTJJM7FX pattern and a 2022 JTJAM7BX pattern, the latter listed as a 460 Premium, returned the same engine and plant. The 2024 and 2025 JTJ patterns we tried were thinner, giving only make, year and a Toyota plant, so on a GX 550 lean on the window sticker and a Lexus dealer lookup for trim. Our Lexus VIN decoder post explains the JTJ prefix and how to read the rest.

GX 460 or GX 550

The GX 460 is old-school, and that is most of its appeal. Car and Driver's 2023 GX review lists a 301-hp 4.6-liter V-8 with a six-speed automatic, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System as standard, 8.1 inches of ground clearance and a 7.2-second run to 60 mph. It also described the truck as a 4Runner with Lexus trim and a V-8 that feels old and creaky until it leaves the pavement. Honestly, that is a fair summary, and plenty of owners like it that way.

The current Car and Driver GX page covers the GX 550: a 349-hp twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6, a 10-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive, with Overtrail trims adding 33-inch all-terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, adaptive suspension and crawl control. The reviewers also noted hood flutter on the highway and a fairly stiff ride. Consumer Reports keeps year-by-year reliability notes for both generations.

Recalls to check on a GX 460

We pulled the GX recall list from NHTSA's recall API this afternoon. The oldest one matters if you are looking at a cheap first-year truck: 10V-159 covers 2010 GX 460s built from November 16, 2009 through April 8, 2010 that could skid sideways in a sharp turn at high speed, fixed by reprogramming the stability control. Then come the Takata passenger air bag inflators. 16V-340 covers 2010-2011 GX 460s sold or registered in hot, humid states such as Alabama, California, Florida and Texas, 18V-024 covers 2013 trucks in the same zone, and 19V-741 covers 2010-2017 GX 460s, with the exact air bag part replaced depending on the vehicle. Our Takata air bag recall check post covers why a former Florida or Texas registration matters. Late trucks are not clean either: 20V-682 covers 2018-2019 GX 460 fuel pumps that can fail.

Recalls to check on a GX 550

The big one is 25V-767, which covers 2024 GX models with the V35A engine where manufacturing debris can damage the main bearings and cause a stall. Dealers inspect the number one main bearing with software and drive data and replace the engine if needed, and owner letters only went out on August 28, 2026. It expands an earlier recall, 24V-381. Two smaller ones are worth a printout as well: 26V-341, an instrument cluster that may not show some warnings on 2024 trucks, fixed by an over-the-air update, and 25V-744, a camera software fault that can freeze the rearview image. Check the VIN on our Lexus recall check by VIN page and the Toyota and Lexus recall lookup.

Off-road wear and title history

A GX that has been wheeled hard can still have a perfectly clean history report, since rock rash and a bent skid plate rarely get reported to anyone. Get it on a lift and look for dented rocker panels, scraped frame rails, a lift kit or oversized tires, and silt in odd places after water crossings. The report covers what the underside cannot: CARFAX says its reports draw on title, odometer, ownership and accident records, which is where flood and salvage brands show up. A seller PDF with no VIN on the page does not count.

As of mid October 2026, a CARFAX report through us is about $5.50 as a guest or about $4.50 as a member, and the CARFAX plus AutoCheck bundle is about $6.75, compared with roughly $39.99 to $44.99 retail. Confirm at checkout. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller and are not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, or Experian.

So, if you mostly drive on pavement, our used Lexus RX buying guide may fit better, and the used Toyota 4Runner buying guide covers the GX 460's close cousin.
