Peugeot left the U.S. market long ago, but NHTSA still lists campaigns on 405 and 505 models you can query by year. A 1990 Peugeot 405 returned four campaigns when I queried NHTSA on Nov. 5, 2026, including fuel-line, fuel-filler, seat-belt and headlight filings. A 1990 Peugeot 505 returned campaign 96V028000 for fuel-tank mounting corrosion. Clear open recalls by VIN before you buy.
Sources were NHTSA's recallsByVehicle API for Peugeot 405 and 505 model year 1990 (queried Nov. 5, 2026), the NHTSA vPIC decoder and NMVTIS. I am not linking dead static NHTSA PDF mirrors; campaign IDs come from the live API response that day.
Campaigns that still show up
For a 1990 Peugeot 405, NHTSA returned:
- 94V064000: fuel supply line that can contact a high-voltage ignition lead.
- 89V161000: fuel leakage beyond FMVSS 301 limits in a rear barrier crash (filler pipe / tank assembly).
- 89V158000: electrical interference between the passive belt motor and control unit.
- 97V038000: gradual deterioration of the headlight plastic lens.
For a 1990 Peugeot 505, NHTSA returned:
- 96V028000: corrosion protection of the fuel tank mounting that can allow water and debris to collect.
Other years return different sets. Query the exact VIN. A seller who says "Peugeots do not have recalls anymore" is guessing.
How to check a Peugeot VIN
Decode the VIN on vPIC, then run recalls with NHTSA tools or our NHTSA recall check by VIN walkthrough. Compare open rows on a history report via open recalls on CARFAX and how to read a CARFAX report.
U.S. Peugeot dealer networks are gone. Independent specialists and European-car shops are your completion path. Call them with the campaign ID before you send a deposit. Parts for 405 and 505 fuel and belt systems can be scarce.
Title and buying traps
Gray-market stories, odometer quirks and flood brands show up on old French cars that bounced through multiple states. Confirm the title on NMVTIS and match every VIN stamp on the car. A pretty 505 with an open fuel-tank campaign is a garage project until a shop confirms the mount repair.
Honestly, budget more for specialty labor than the asking price suggests. Defunct-brand bargains usually hide that line item.
Reseller pricing caveat
We're a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck, Experian or Peugeot. As of early November 2026, guest reports are about $5.50, member reports about $4.50, and the bundle about $6.75, versus retail near $39.99 to $44.99. Confirm at checkout.
Title brands, odometer gaps and salvage rebuilds show up on a report you buy yourself, even when the paint looks straight. Cross-check the VIN plate, door sticker and dashboard stamp so the car matches the paper before you wire a deposit.
Defunct-brand cars often need specialty shops for campaign parts. Call before you buy so a quoted "open recall" is actually completable, not a dead campaign with no inventory.
