Red Canoe Credit Union does not list a CARFAX or AutoCheck report as a requirement on its public rates page, so the history check is on you. When I read redcanoecu.com/rates on Nov. 5, 2026, Auto Loans were advertised with competitive rates as low as 4.99% APR for both used and new autos, with a payment example of $189.81 per month on a $10,000 loan at 5.24% APR for 60 months.
What Red Canoe's rate page says
As of Nov. 5, 2026 the vehicle section listed:
- Used Auto APR as low as 4.99%; payment example $10,000 at 5.24% for 60 months equals about $189.81 per month.
- New Auto APR as low as 4.99%; same style of example payment language on the page.
- Other secured products on the same page, including motorcycle/ATV/jet-ski APRs as low as 9.69% and boat/RV APRs as low as 7.84%, with their own examples.
- Marketing language that auto loans come with flexible terms for buying or refinancing.
I did not find language saying a CARFAX is mandatory to close an auto loan. Ask your loan officer what documents they need for your VIN, because underwriting details are not all on the rates page.
Why you should still pull a report
A low advertised APR assumes the car is acceptable collateral. A rebuilt brand or odometer problem can change approval or the amount financed. Run the VIN at NHTSA for recalls, then buy a history report you control. Our NHTSA versus CARFAX and NMVTIS versus CARFAX guides explain what each source catches, and CARFAX for private party sales covers private deals.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Do you require a CARFAX, AutoCheck or NMVTIS printout for this VIN?
- Will a salvage, rebuilt or lemon brand change the APR or stop the loan?
- How do you treat private-party purchases on title and lien release timing?
- What term and LTV limits apply to a car of this age and mileage?
How to use the ranges without getting trapped
The 4.99% "as low as" figure is a floor for qualifying members and collateral, not a promise for every VIN. Ask for your actual APR in writing. Look, we have seen buyers treat the example payment as their payment, then learn credit or mileage pushed them higher. Pull the report before the deposit.
Title brands and Red Canoe
The public rates page does not publish a full brand matrix. Ask the underwriter how salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon titles are treated, and read financing a rebuilt title car. Red Canoe serves Washington and nearby members; our Washington private sale title transfer guide covers that state's paperwork.
What a lender check does not cover
A lender title search protects collateral, not your wallet after a missed recall or hidden flood damage. Run NHTSA, compare odometer readings and pay for an inspection. Our pre-purchase inspection cost guide covers typical shop fees.
Reading the payment example correctly
Red Canoe's $10,000 example at 5.24% APR for 60 months (about $189.81 per month) is an illustration, not your quote. Your payment will move with credit, term, down payment and whether the car is new or used. Ask for a written quote on the VIN you intend to buy, including any fees that sit outside the APR.
So keep the example payment and your real quote on the same notepad. If the seller's asking price only works when you pretend the example is your rate, renegotiate or walk. Confirm insurance requirements too, because full coverage is common on financed cars even when the rates page stays quiet about it.
When the deal is private-party, ask Red Canoe how they want the title and lien handled on closing day, and who cuts the check to the seller. A clean rate quote with a messy title process still strands you at the DMV.
Closing day paperwork
Ask Red Canoe how they want the title and lien handled on closing day, and who cuts the check to the seller. A clean rate quote with a messy title process still strands you at the DMV. Bring your history PDF, the signed bill of sale and photo ID so the loan officer is not chasing missing pages while the seller waits.
What the report costs
As of early November 2026 a CARFAX bought direct usually costs around $44.99, and AutoCheck sits a little lower. We are a licensed CARFAX and AutoCheck reseller, not affiliated with CARFAX, AutoCheck or Experian. Our guest price has been about $5.50 a report, about $4.50 for members, and about $6.75 for a CARFAX and AutoCheck bundle. Confirm the price at checkout, since it can change.
Honestly, a few dollars on a report is cheap next to five years of payments on the wrong car. Keep the PDF with your loan packet.
